Ireland • CAO – On-line applications for universities in the Republic of Ireland • Direct application – On-line applications for St. Mary’s College Belfast (Teaching and Liberal Arts) • Direct application – QUB: School of Nursing and Midwifery, (BSc Honours) • Further/Higher Education Colleges – check arrangements as they offer a variety of courses

  3. The UCAS Form • Apply 2010 – ‘How To’ guide at UCAStv

  4. The UCAS Form 2 • Personal Details – Name, address etc. • Additional Information – Nationality etc. • Choices – Universities and specific courses • Education – GCSE, A/S achieved and A2 pending • Employment – Employer’s name etc. • Statement – Personal statement • Confidential Reference from school – Data form

The UCAS Form 3 • www.ucas.com • Apply • Register/Log in to use Apply 2010 (Not 2009) • Register, (ONCE only) - NB: If your surname begins with Mc e.g. McKee, there should be no spaces between the McK • E-mail user@c2kni.net • See hand-out on accessing e-mail from home • Record UCAS user name and password in a file and folder called UCAS in ‘my documents’

  8. Personal Statement 2 • My career interests and aspirations • My work experience – health-related courses, teaching etc. need a lot of detail. This is a very important section. • My academic skills, interests and achievements. Mention A/S repeats if relevant. • My contribution to school life • My other interests and hobbies • A conclusion

  9. Personal Statement 3 • Keep the statement personal. No two statements should be similar. Use of software on the UCAS site to detect copying. • Concentrate on skills developed and insights gained rather than just saying what happened. • Ensure that your work is clear and accurate eg. spelling, punctuation etc. • Ask an adult or trusted friend to read your work before asking a teacher to look at it.

  12. University of Liverpool? • If you have a specific interest in this university leave your name and the name of the course you are interested in with the teacher at the end of the day. A representative of the university may be able to visit the school.

  13. CAO • Universities in Irish Republic • Register on-line at www.cao.ie • You will need a credit card number • Type in personal details • Rank order courses in order of preference • No personal statement or confidential reference

  14. What Next? • Research courses very carefully • Draft a personal statement • Take advice from family, friends and members of staff • Study! Remember you will only meet the grade requirements if you commit yourself to hard work • Good Luck!
