  3. UCAS: THE PROCESS • YEAR 12 ctd/ • Higher Education Module in PSE programme – university choice & personal statements • Hertfordshire Higher Education Convention – June 2008 • ‘UCAS Day’ in Activity Week • Talk by Admissions Tutor • Logging on to UCAS

  4. UCAS: THE PROCESS YEAR 13 ON-LINE REGISTRATION • ‘Buzzword’ needed • Log-on process information sheets available • Declining grades (AS RE-takes) complete as PENDING for Jan/June 2008

UCAS: THE PROCESS • APPLICATIONS • Choose five universities – (Some operate ‘points’ system, some look for final grades): • TWO at height of ambition (within estimated grades) • ONE/TWO which can be reasonably expected to achieve • ONE/TWO as insurance places for a bad day • BE PREPARED TO TAKE UP PLACE IF AN OFFER IS ACCEPTED (INCLUDES INSURANCE PLACE)

  6. UCAS: THE PROCESS REFERENCES • Compiled from reports – process going on at the moment • ‘Topped & tailed’ by form tutors (usually) • Finally vetted and sent by me

  7. UCAS: THE PROCESS PERSONAL STATEMENTS • THEIR INTERVIEW (in most cases) so complete with care • Be specific with information • Discuss with five people before entering on to form

  8. UCAS: THE PROCESS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE UCAS FORM IS FILLED IN? • When details & personal statement are completed ‘SEND’ • It comes to me and I will complete reference and send off • £15 registration fee due to UCAS • Application will be sent when fee is paid

  9. UCAS: THE PROCESS TARGET • Complete by HALF TERM (> 90 to process) • Some universities operate a ‘first come, first served principle – others do not. • Oxbridge/medicine: 15 (extended to 16) October (ALREADY SENT!)

  10. UCAS: THE PROCESS • FINANCE – TUITION - £3 000 pa • Meeting by HCC Student Loans Dept in March 2007 • LOAN: Pay nothing whilst studying – pay back when earning >£15 000 pa • GRANT: Means tested • BURSARIES: Unis/Charities etc
