  1. Paradigms and World Peace Dr. Fred Travis Director, Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition Maharishi University of Management Fairfield, Iowa USA

  2. Paradigms provide the framework to make meaning of experiences, to judge individual goals and actions, and to decide priorities of research questions and even the measures we will use.

  3. Thoughts Thoughts Thoughts Thoughts Pure Consciousness

  4. Orme-Johnson, et al. (1988) Addressing world conflict from the underlying field of Collective Consciousness. Journal of Social Indicators, 32: 776 - 812. • Field Experiment: Aug 1 – Sept 30, 1983 • Independent review board of scientists were told in advance publicly available data that would be measured; and were given the numbers of people in the group twice during the research.

  5. In Jerusalem • Crime rate • Accident rate • Fires In Israel • Crime • National Mood (content analysis) In Lebanon • War Deaths • War Intensity (content analysis)

  6. Transfer Function Fitting of Composite Index of Seven Variables Orme-Johnson, et al. (1988) Addressing world conflict from the underlying field of Collective Consciousness. Journal of Social Indicators, 32: 776-812.

  7. Davies, J. and Alexander, C. Journal of Social Behavior & Personality, 200517(1):285-338 • Tested the SQRT 1% prediction in seven studies whose size and proximity to Lebanon should affect the war. • Content analysis by a single Lebanese rater of the 27-month periodspanning these assemblies: June 1 to August 30 1983. He was blind to the research hypothesis.

  8. Variables from the Content Analysis • Level of Cooperation between Lebanon and other countries • Level of Conflict between Lebanon and other countries • Total number of causalities in the Lebanon war • Peace/War Index—combination of the first three

  9. Davies, J.L. and Alexander, C. Journal of Social Behavior & Personality, 2005,17(1):285-338

  10. This finding has been replicated in a 3rd sociological experiment, the DC demonstration study, plus 15 others. • Let us accept as a working hypothesis that individuals can affect the quality of life through meditation practice. • How might this happen?

  11. If there is an effect, it would have to be through known fields • Any of the four known forces? • Unified field? • Hidden sector matter? • Has gravity in common • Dark energy? Dark Matter?

  12. If there is an effect, it would have to be through known fields Laser physics: • Solitons—long range telecommunication • In water, mechanical and laser systems, once generated will propagate at speed of light and retain shape over long time • such as tsunami…attention create a pulse on the level of the unified field…on what level attention is focused PSI research group, Jan Dalkvist • Group telepathy, dozen of students

  13. Laser threshold: • Noise to broad, non coherent light emitting diodes • Laser require more numbers of atoms and once pass abrupt threshold have spectral purity, long distance. • Haken, laser systems and chaotic systems • Collectively seen but more gradually…but seen in economic systems • PSI • Nelson, Princeton, • Resonance Unified Field • Boundary line between UF and relativity

  14. Quantum optics: entanglement — simultaneous, no information is transported. • No wave propagated; part of same system • Individual experience of TM • When meditate in group as if whole society is meditating. • Threshold level—organization • Standing wave (stable pattern) in laser—pattern perserved in laser cavity—but traveling wave as laser travels through time and space.

  15. Threshold effects in other systems. • Consciousness =UF? Or subset of UF? or boundary line of quantum and classical • Consciousness = superposition of quantum effects (Walsh) • Psi-track phenomenon • #260 • Is directional, not EM or gravity • Dowsing not EM or gravity Nils-Olof Jacobson, Zaid—hidden sector matter or subtle energy • Different types of media…connection between everything • Natural Law

  16. Boundary conditions • Classical constraints of system that gives specific condition • Separation of mirrors, size, compare to wave length • Boundary condition of MMY effect • Intention of person? Come to course • But also many other effects • Time (at same time) and space (75% if spatially separate) how close to sit? • “Boundary effects” of country, culture, collective consciousness

  17. Boundary conditions of MMY Effect • PSI track or ray from sender to object…not EM, media goes through air, granite and wood; avoids metal; not go through plastic bags; not do well in water • Extended source (large groups) larger effect—antenna size send and receive—discontinuous: Separate are additive.
