  3. Present SimpleTense • We use simple present tense to talk about things in general. Ex: Nurseslook after the patients in hospitals. Childrenlike ice-cream • We use it to say that something happens repeatedly or for habitual actions or daily activities I usually go to the market at weekends. Paulwakes up at 5 in the morning. • We use it to say that something is true in general. The earth goes round the sun.

  8. Points to remember • Remember that we say Iwork, but heworks. Theyteachbut my sister (She) teaches. Wesingbut Rihanna(She) sings. • Don’t forget the –s in 3rd person singular (e.g., he, she, it, Peter, Jane, My father, etc)

  11. Interrogative sentences • We have discussed affirmative sentences earlier, now will discuss Interrogative sentences. • We use Do/Does to make questions. • Ex: Do You drive? • Does she sing? Etc.

  15. Negative sentences • We use do/does to make negative sentences. • Ex: I don’tgo to the market in the evening. • Sallydoesn’ttake sugar in her coffee. (She).

  16. Remember We use the present simple to talk about →regular, repeated activities or situations Susan goes to school every day →things that are generally or always true The River Ebro flows into the Mediterranean sea

  17. Remember • In the third person singular affirmative the verb has a final -s/-esShe goes to school everyday • We form the negative with don’t (doesn’t in the 3rd person singular). They don’t like sweets/ She doesn´t live in Madrid • We form questions with Do…?(Does …?in the 3rd person singular). Doesshe eat sweets? Do you like football?

  18. Some more use of Present simple • We use present simple with adverbs of frequency when we say how often we do things For ex: In the summer Johnusuallyplaystennis. NEVER SOMETIMES OFTEN USUALLY ALWAYS

  19. Pattern: subject + adverb + verb Thomas and Philip alwaysbegin their day at 7 o’clock. Sheusuallyplaysbasketball on Mondays. Peter oftenwatchesTV at breakfast. They nevergohome on weekdays. We sometimesplayfootball. • With the verb TO BE we use a different pattern Pattern: subject + am/is/are+ adverb Thomas and Philip arealwaysbusy at school. They areneverlate for their activities. Heis usuallyready for breakfast at 7 o’clock. Weareoftenin the music room during the breaks. Jamesissometimestired at the end of the day.
