  2. Objective • By the end of this lesson, you will be able to find equivalent fractions. • Standard 4NS1.5 - Students will…explain equivalence of fractions.

Warm-Up • Using the grid paper on your desk, please cut the paper in half and write the fraction that each represents. • What is the fraction for each part? • Now, cut one of those pieces in half again. • What is the fraction for each part for these pieces? • How many fourths equal one half? • Now, cut each of the fourths in half. • What is the fraction for these? • How many eighths equal a half?

  4. Introduce • Ryan H. has 8 fish in an aquarium. Four fish are green. So, Ryan says that 4/8 of the fish are green. Could Ryan use another fraction to represent 4/8?

  5. 1 1/2 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8 Equivalent Fractions • The fractions models to the left show that 4/8 is the same as 1/2. • Fractions that name the same number are equivalent fractions. Mrs. Benson!!

  6. One Way: Multiply 4 x 2 = 8 8 x 2 16 Multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number, 2. Another Way: Divide 4 ÷ 2 = 2 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number, 2. Find Equivalent Fractions • Find three fractions that are equivalent to 4/8. • To find equivalent fractions, you can use multiplication • or division. So, 8/16, 2/4, or 1/2 could be used to represent 4/8.
