  1. Dress for the Job You Want By Zach Whelchel

  2. Research Question • Through my research I looked to answer two questions: • 1. Does dressing professionally affect focus and confidence in class? • 2. Will the effects wear off by the end of a thirty day immersion period?

  3. Method • My way of addressing my research questions is to dress in professional attire for class for 30 days. While doing so, I will monitor changes in my focus and confidence levels in the classroom.

  4. Projected Outcomes • My original hypothesis when I began my immersion project was that professional attire would improve aspects of my classroom performance such as focus and confidence. However, I expected the effects to wear off by the end of the immersion period once the attire became the norm.

  5. A Project with no Purpose • I quickly found that one’s attire does not dictate classroom performance. • Without reason for the professional garb, it didn’t add any additional motivation to excel. • I really just felt silly sticking out like a sore thumb in class

  6. Applications to Real World • My failed experiment doesn’t mean the principle isn’t applicable in a business or school setting. • School uniform or dress code policies can create a professional atmosphere and improve performance • Dressing well and promoting yourself in the business world can get you up the company ladder.

  7. For Example… • 55% of workers in the financial services business say a well-dressed worker is more likely to be promoted • 51% of sales reps • 33% of manufacturing employees • And 37% of IT professionals

In Conclusion • Although my immersion project didn’t present the results I had imagined, it doesn’t mean your attire has no effect on your success in a professional environment. • If you plan on going into a professional field and hope to someday move up in the business world, your attire does matter.
