Regular and Irregular Verbs • Regular verbs end with –ed in the past and past participle forms. • Irregular verbs have past and past participle forms that are spelled in other ways. • Most of the verbs you have learned about so far have been regular verbs. The irregular verbs you have studied are be, do, and see. The chart on the next slide shows how some verbs form their principal parts. The first two verbs are regular verbs. The next five are irregular verbs.

  4. Directions for 1-5, page 194: identify and write the verb or verb phrase in each sentence. Then tell if the main verb is a regular verb or an irregular verb. Example: William Mitchell had studied the stars for years. Answer: had studied, regular

  5. 1. His young daughter, Maria, often helped him.

  6. 2. He had encouraged her interest in mathematics and science.

  7. 3. As an adult, Maria Mitchell worked as a librarian.

  8. 4. Maria was also her father’s assistant at his observatory.

  9. 5. Few people knew about their librarian’s interest in astronomical studies.

  10. Directions for 6-15, page 195: identify and write the verb or verb phrase in each sentence. Then tell if the main verb is a regular verb or an irregular verb. Some sentences have two verbs. Example: The father and daughter had seen great things in the night sky. Answer: had seen, irregular

  14. 9. Scientist agreed, and they gave her credit for the discovery.

  17. 12. She had become the first woman astronomer in the United States.

  18. 13. Maria Mitchell worked as a professor of astronomy.

  19. 14. She studied the sun and took photographs of its surface.

  20. 15. Astronomers respected her and her studies.

  21. 16. Long ago, people thought that the sun traveled around Earth.

  22. 17. In 1543 Copernicus proposed that Earth traveled around the sun.

  23. 18. Galileo studies the stars with a telescope.

  24. 19. Before 1781 astronomers had know of only six planets.

  25. 20. Telescopes in orbit around the Earth have given scientists more knowledge.
