  1. The Imperfect Tense:Regular-Irregular Verbs Use Preterite vs. Imperfect

  2. Preterite • Ana cantó en la fiesta anoche. • Ana sang at the party last night. • (Completed past action.)

  3. Imperfect • The imperfect tense is another way to talk about the past. We use it to describe actions without any indication of their beginning or end.

  4. Imperfect • Ana cantaba. • Ana was singing. • (No indication of beginning or end.)

  5. Imperfect • We use the imperfect to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to” to express this idea.

  6. Imperfect • Generalmente caminaban mucho. • Generally they would walk a lot.

  7. Imperfect • Jugaban con otros niños de la familia. • They used to play with other children in the family.

  8. Imperfect • Expressions such as generalmente, a menudo, muchasveces, todos los días, siempre,and nuncacan cue us to use the imperfect.

  9. The Imperfect • There are three irregular verbs in the imperfect. The verbs IR,SER, and VER.

  10. The Imperfect • The imperfect form of hay is había (there was/were, there used to be) • Generalmente, no había muchos participantes en el campeonato.

  11. Age: El hombre bajo tenía 37 años. • Time on the clock: Eran las tres de la tarde • Weather: Hacía frío • Thoughts and Emotions:Ella estaba muy triste. • Physical Descriptions: El chico eradelgadísimo y tenía pelo teñido de verde!

  12. Preterite vs. Imperfect • When speaking about the past, you can use either the preterite or the imperfect, depending on the sentence and the meaning you wish to convey. Compare… • Este fin de semana toméuna clase de cerámica. Cuando era niño, tomaba clases de escultura.

  13. Preterite vs. Imperfect • Use the preterite to tell about past actions that happened and are complete. • El sábado, la clase empezó a las 10 de la mañana.

  14. Preterite vs. Imperfect • Use the imperfect to tell about habitual actions in the past. • Cuando era niño, las clasesempezaban a las 5 de la tarde.

  15. Preterite vs. Imperfect • Use the preterite to give a sequence of actions in the past. • Cuandollegamos, la profesora sacó su pintura y sus pinceles y empezó a pintar.

  16. Preterite vs. Imperfect • Use the imperfect when two or more actions are taking place simultaneously in the past. • Mientras los niños pintaban, el profesor observaba las pinturas.

  17. Preterite vs. Imperfect • Use the preterite and the imperfect together when an action (preterite) interrupts another that is taking place in the past (imperfect). • Yo estudiabacuando mi hermano entrómi cuarto. • Estábamos en el taller cuando entró el profesor.

  18. For both the imperfect and preterite tenses, there are trigger words. Here are some common trigger words for the imperfect and preterite • El Pretérito • Anoche, ayer, el otro día, anteayer, el año pasado, el mes pasado….. • El imperfecto: • Siempre, a menudo, por lo general, usualmente, algunas veces, a veces, todos los días…..
