  1. Secondary Math Education in Connecticut Where are we now and what can YOU do? Marlene M. Lovanio Ed Manager, Bureau of Teaching and Learning Connecticut State Department of Education 860-713-6786 marlene.lovanio@ct.gov

  2. Today’s Goals: To understand the CSDE expectations for mathematics education. Determine how the curriculum resources can be used to maximize student learning. To share ideas and impressions from state and national recommendations. Connect CAPT into daily instruction.

  3. I am from the State and I am here to help… Think, Pair, Share: What are the “hot topics” in math education in the state and in the nation?

  4. Web Resources • Math E-alerts – sign up at www.sde.ct.gov • http://mathteacherprep.wikispaces.com

  5. CSDE Bureaus • Curriculum • Framework • Instructional Support • Professional Development • Assessment • CMT/CAPT • Certification - New Certification Regs • BEST/MAP • School Improvement/Accountability

  6. Bureau of School Improvement

  7. Current Expectations • Students take 3 years of math in HS and meet CAPT standards to graduate. • Districts align with Curriculum Standards and Grade Level Expectations for PK-8. • 9-12 Core Mathematics Framework includes Algebra 1 and Geometry concepts. • Schools will follow an RTI model

  8. SRBI • 3 Tier system of high‐quality core general education practices & targeted interventions for students experiencing learning, social‐emotional or behavioral difficulties • progress monitoring • identification procedures for learning disabilities

  9. Other Related Topics How will math education change in Connecticut based on the current climate?

  10. National Math Panel Report Providing the “best available scientific evidence” to improve students ability to do and understand the mathematics that will make a difference in their future.

  11. Algebra = Gatekeeper Algebra

  12. The National Math Panel Report • Early start • Streamline the curriculum • Effort & opportunity will lead to achievement, not just inherent talent

  13. The National Math Panel Report • Critical Foundations of Algebra • whole numbers • fractions • particular aspects of geometry • Students must learn “School Algebra” and should be assessed in this by 11th grade.

  14. The National Math Panel Report • Balance conceptual understanding, skill development and problem solving • Use formative assessment • Focus assessments on critical foundations • Teachers must be mathematically knowledgeable • Pre-service • Current workforce

  15. Common Core Standards Movement CCSSO, NGA, Achieve, ACT & College Board with 46+ states signed on for the: • Development of College Ready Standards by July • K-12 Standards by December • Rate of Adoption ≥ 80% in 2010

  16. Secondary School Reform

  17. Building Blocks of Reform Engagement • Extensive Professional Development • Expanded Learning Options • Increased Supports/Programs • Student Success Plans with Career Path Options • Smaller Learning Communities and Adult-Student Connections Rigor • 24 Credits: Includes a Core Curriculum of Required Courses • Final Examinations and Performance Tasks 21st Century Learning • Technology and other 21st Century Learning Skills Embedded in Model Curricula • A Senior Demonstration Project

  18. 21st Century Skills Critical Thinking Problem Solving Innovation Creativity Self-Direction Work Ethic Collaboration Written Communication Information Technology Leadership Professional Skills Interpersonal Work & Personal Ethics Communication Attendance Interview Abilities Attitude Teamwork Time Management Organizational Leadership Cultural Awareness 21st Century Skills

  19. F= 4(S-65) + 10 Or There went the flashing lights…saw my speedometer at 79 then remembered: The speeding fine here in Vermont is $4 for every mile per hour over the 65 mph limit plus a $10 handling fee. How much would I have to pay for this mistake? Source: Steve Leinwand – April 2008 What does the content look like?

  20. Solve for x: 16*0.75x < 1 Or You take 16 mg. of a controlled substance at 8 a.m. Your body metabolizes 25% of the substance every hour. Will you pass a 4 p.m. drug test the a requires a level of less than 1 mg? At what time could you first pass the test? Source: Steve Leinwand – April 2008 What does the content look like?

  21. Secondary School Reform Engagement, 21st Century Learning and Rigor • Phase I (2009 – 2011) • Capstone Project • Student Success Plans • Student Supports • Curriculum Development • Phase II (2011-2014) • Piloting the CT Plan • Phase III (2014-2015) • Encouragement of full Implementation

  22. Bureau of Teaching and Learning Guiding what students should know and be able to do in mathematics and other content areas.

  23. Standards, GLEs, CMT Correlations Sequenced GLEs (6-8 math in units) Learning Activities, Instructional Considerations, Assessments, District Correlations PK -8 Math Model for Curriculum Curriculum Standards Document Overview Pacing Guide Benchmark Assessments Curriculum Document Sample Lessons

  24. PK -8 Math Model for Curriculum • Supports student understanding of Algebra • Algebraic concepts are developed with purpose grades 4-8 • Supports critical foundations of algebra Coming soon! Algebra I Curriculum

  25. 9-12 Framework • Based on the 4 content standards • 9-12 Core • aligned with algebra & geometry • For most completed by gr. 10 • 9-12 Extended • Selected topics • Algebra II and beyond

  26. Building Conceptual Development Across Grades: ALGEBRAIC REASONING: PATTERNS AND FUNCTIONS - Patterns and functional relationships can be represented and analyzed using a variety of strategies, tools, and technology. • In small groups, complete one activity: Knot Tying, Quarterback, Baseball Salary, Maximizing Profit, All Events Pass • Determine what student learning is being addressed through the activity. • Share.

  27. What do these activities have in common? • What are the important mathematical concepts? • What skills are developed?

  28. Assessing Student Learning

  29. Bureau of Student Assessment • CMT Generation 4 • CAPT Generation 3 • Item Writing • CMT/CAPT Advisory Committees • Psychometricians

  30. What is CAPT? • One of two statewide tests • Connecticut General Statutes (Sec. 10-14n) • Standard for High School graduation (Sec. 10-223a) • Criterion Reference Test • One piece of comprehensive assessment

  31. “What we assess and how we assess it communicates what we value.” National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics

  32. ContentTested by students: • Applying their understanding • Reasoning • Problem Solving • Communicating • Computing and estimating • Algebraic Reasoning • Numerical and Proportional Reasoning • Geometry and Measurement • Working with Data

  33. Looking at Student Work Planetarium: Look through the rubric. Determine how students did. What did they know? What did they not know? On problems like these, what do students need to succeed?

  34. CAPT PREP = Developing Habits of Mind

  35. A strong curriculum and great teaching will develop mathematically literate students.

  36. HOW?

  37. CAPT Third Generation Handbook • 10 Practical teaching strategies • Test blueprint • Released items by Expected Performance • Electronic & print versions

  38. A ball rebounds ½ the height from which it was dropped. A ball is dropped from 128 feet and keeps bouncing. How far will the ball have traveled up and down when it strikes the ground for the fifth time?

  39. Challenge: Start every day with a word problem!

  40. ClassroomConsiderations What can YOU do?

  41. The Feds have authorized me to leave your child behind.

  42. Are You READY?

  43. Final Thoughts • Know that it is OK to… • Try and fail • Ask questions • Share • Change • Cry • Enjoy making a difference!
