  1. Unit 9: Geometry – 6th Grade Lesson 7: surface area of a prism

  2. Cornell Notes Header

  3. vocabulary • surface area - the sum of all the areas of the faces.

  4. Surface area of a prism • Finding the Surface Area, S, of a Prism: • (1) Find the area of each face. • (2) Add all the areas. • Note: It is helpful to draw a picture (diagram) and label the dimensions before finding • any areas.

  5. Surface area of a prism example • Afront = lw (front & back) • = (4)(3) • = 12 cm2 • Atop = lw (top & bottom) • = (4)(2) • = 8 cm2 • Aside = lw (2 sides) • = (2)(3) • = 6 cm2 • S = 12 + 12 + 8 + 8 + 6 + 6 = 52 cm2 3 cm 2 cm 4 cm

  6. Surface area of a prism example • Find the surface area of a rectangular prism that is 8 inches by 2 inches by 5 inches. • 5 in. • 2 in. • 8 in. • S = A front + A back + A top + A bottom + A side + A side • S = (8 x 5) + (8 x 5) + (8 x 2) + (8 x 2) + (2 x 5) + (2 x 5) • S = 40 + 40 + 16 + 16 + 10 + 10 • S = 132 in2

  7. Surface area group problem • You want to paint a jewelry box that is 8 inches by 7 ½ inches by 3 inches with a clear polish. The label on the bottle of polish says it covers a total area of 250 square inches. Do you have enough to cover the entire box?  (Assume the lid is included in the measurements.) • 3 in. • 8 in. 7 ½ in. • S = (8 x 3) + (8 x 3) + (8 x 7 ½ ) + (8 x 7 ½ ) + (7 ½ x 3) + (7 ½ x 3) • S = 24 + 24 + 60 + 60 + 22 ½ + 22 ½ • S = 213 in2
