  1. Welcome to Meet the Teacher Night! Miss Ganz

  2. Subject Area • Reading/ English Language Arts • Prepares students to take the PSSA in Reading • Helps students recover old skills while learning new ones

  3. Class Time • Warm-up period (5-7 minutes completed in notebook for a class work grade • Focus skill lesson on PSSA content material • Shared reading of a grade level text • Independent or group practice • Independent reading of a skill level book

  4. Homework • Given most nights except Friday • Some work is completed in the red workbooks (Read and Write) • Other work extends the lesson and helps students to think critically

  5. Projects • In class projects often allow students to use technology and gain 21rst century skills which they need for today’s job market • Out of class projects will allow student to use the community resources to complete projects that interest them

  6. Grade Scale • Tests- 40 percent • Projects- 30 percent • Class work- 20 percent • Homework- 10 percent

  7. Behavior • Student behavior is monitored by the teacher and support staff • Students lose points when their behavior becomes disruptive and therefore they lose privileges • Student behavior that breaks the code of conduct will result in a parent phone call or conference, referral to the principal or possible suspension

  8. Grade 7 • Grade 7 is your student’s most important year • Determines which high school students will attend • High schools look at: grades behavior (No suspensions allowed!) attendance

  9. PSSA Scores • Also determine which high school students will go to • Top tier schools require ADVANCED scores in reading and math (Central, Academy at Palumbo, Girl’s HS, Masterman, Saul) • Tier two schools require proficient or advanced scores (Lankaneu, Dobson, Randolph, Parkways, BOK)

  10. Reading • Message from Miss Ganz: • The easiest way to improve a child’s ability to read to themselves is by having them read at least 30 minutes per night. This activity is shown to greatly increase student’s ability to read on level. The library is a wonderful place to find interesting books for your student to read! Prizes like a fun day out or an extra dessert can help persuade a reluctant reader.
