Eating for Energy

  2. 4-11-14 Bell Work: • When a new species is introduced where it doesn’t belong and it becomes an invasive species, what happens to the ecosystem?

  3. Review: The main reason some introduced species survive and overpopulate an area is that: There are often no natural predators in the area There is often not enough food for other organisms Most organisms can survive in new habitats People feed them

  4. 4-11-14 Objective: • I will investigate the change in an ecosystem when a new species is introduced. • HW: None

  5. Vocabulary: • Consumers-Organisms that eat other organisms. • Photosynthesis-The process plants use to make food. • Plankton-microscopic animals that zebra mussels eat. • Producers-Organisms that produce their own food.

  6. Write the answers to these questions in your journal. • Do sharks want to eat humans? • Why do they sometimes bite a human?

  7. Write the answers to these questions in your journal. • Why do the ant lions dig holes? • Who would win between the ant lion and the trap jaw?

  8. Write the answers to these questions in your journal • Are manatees herbivores, carnivores or omnivores? • What did people long ago think manatees really were?

  9. Notes: • Carnivores do not kill for fun. Even though it looks mean sometimes they need to eat. • Without eating no organism would have energy. • The whole point in eating is for energy.

  10. Read • Page E-43 to E-48 • Complete question on page E-48 #3.
