LIFE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS • SLAVERY STARTED IN VIRIGINIA • BY THE EARLY 1700’S SLAVERY WAS IN EVERY COLONY • PEOPLE IN NORTHERN COLONIES FOUND THAT IT COST LESS TO HIRE A WORKER WHEN NEEDED THAN TO BUY A SLAVE • IN THE SOTHERN COLONIES SLAVERY SPREAD RAPIDLY • SOUTHERN SLAVES HELPED RAISE TABACCO, RICE, INDIGO, AND OTHER CASH CROPS

ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE • MOST SLAVES WERE BROUGHT FROM WEST AFRICA • AFFRICANS WERE TRADED FOR SUPPLIES • SOME SUPPLIES INCLUDED CLOTH, GUNS, AND RUM • EVEN TEN YEAR OLDS WERE TAKEN AS SLAVES • SHIPS WERE REALLY CROWDED AND FILLED WITH DISEASE • MANY DIED, AND THE ONES WHO DIDN’T WISH THEY HAD • THE TRADE WAS VERY PROFITABLE

WORK WITHOUT HOPE • SLAVE MASTERS IN AMERICA DEMANDED HARD WORK • SOME SLAVES WORKED IN FIELDS RAISING CROPS • WHILE OTHERS WORKED AS NURSES, CARPENTERS , BLACKSMITHS, DRIVERS, SERVANTS, GARDENERS, AND MIDWIVES • SLAVES HAD LITTLE HOPE OF GETTING BETTER LIVES • SOME REBELLED, MOST ADAPTED TO THE SITUATION • SLAVES WERE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SOCIETY

  7. RELIGION • COLONISTS TRIED TO LIVE THEIR LIVES BASED OFF THEIR RELIGIOUS FAITH • CHILDERN GREW UP READING THE BIBLE COVER TO COVER SEVERAL TIMES

PURITAN CHURCH SERVICES • EVERYONE HAD TO GO TO CHURCH • THE SOUND OF A DRUM OR HORN CALLED PURITANS TO WORSPIN ON SUNDAY MORNINGS. • HOUSES WERE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE EVEYONE WAS AT CHURCH • CHURCH SERVICES WERE HELD IN THE MEETINGHOUSE • “THE SEATING COMMITTEE” CHOSE YOUR SEATS BASED ON YOUR AGE AND WEALTH • SERVICES COULD LAST UP TO FIVE HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The First great awakening • MADE BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE LOSING THEIR RELIGIOUS FAITH • FORMS WERE KEPT UP, BUT GODLINESS WAS MISSING • PREACHERS GAVE SERMONS THAT TOUCHED THE HEARTS AND SOULS OF MANY PEOPLE • RELIGION GREW BACK • PEOPLE WOULD SING PSALMS IN THE STREET WITH OTHER COLONISTS • ALL PEOPLE NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND GOD’S WILL WAS A OPEN HEART AND A DESIRE TO KNOW GOD’S TRUTH
