  2. Her life • Was born on April 4, 1928 • She had 1 brother named Bailey • Her parents names were Vivian and Bailey • Parents divorced when she was 3 • Moved to Stamps, Missouri with her grandmother

  3. life • Life in Stamps wasn’t easy • Lived in the poorest part of town • Was refused treatment by a white dentist • Sometimes wished she was white • Grandmother had her go live with her mom • She moved to San Francisco

  4. life • She was raped by mother’s boyfriend • She told her brother Bailey • Maya’s uncle killed her attacker • Maya felt guilty like she killed him • Maya went mute for nearly five years

  5. Maya • Selective Mutism is a social disorder • Failure to speak isn’t because lack of knowledge • People might stare blankly into space

  6. life • She moved back to Stamps, Arkansas • Mrs. Flowers helped Maya gain confidence • Maya moved back to San Francisco • Didn’t want to live with her mother • Moved in with her father • Ended up in a shelter for 1 month

  15. writing • Maya also wrote poetry • Her first poem was Jus Give Me A Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I die • Poetry was written to express herself • Her poetry was written with wisdom and creativity
