  3. KySat Enterprise • KySat is a joint enterprise involving: • Public organizations • Private companies • Five Kentucky universities

KySat Enterprise Mission • To advance the capabilities of Kentucky through: • Science and technology education • Research and development • Technology innovation • Workforce development • Economic development • By training students in the areas of: • Spacecraft design and construction • Orbital dynamics • Testing • Operation

  5. KySat-1 Mission • The KySat 1 mission is to: • Develop Infrastructure • Human • Technological • Develop, test, and operate a successful platform that can be use for future advancements in cubesat missions. • Enhance Primary and Secondary Education

KatySat and KySat • The KySat team has been selected to integrate expertise along with current KatySat systems in effort to evolve and complete the KatySat mission. • KySat will build upon previous design work of KatySat. • The team is heavily involved in documentation through the KySat wiki which is open to the KatySat/KySat community.

  14. KySat Concept of Operations • KySat will have two distinct modes of operation • The first mode will be geared toward teachers, students and basic users • The second mode will be geared toward advanced users and HAM radio enthusiasts

KySat Mode 1 Operation • User receives hardware package • Radio • MP3 Player/Recorder • Arrow Antenna • Preamp • General Instruction Booklet • User records audio file • Using website, user enters location to kysat.morehead.edu • School location if desiring audio contact and photo • Target location if desiring remote photo

KySat Mode 1 Operation (cont.) • Server kysat.morehead.edu returns possible pass times over next few weeks via web interface • User selects time, sends audio file to Morehead, selects advanced or basic mode (i.e. Mode 1a or 1b) • User receives confirmation email containing orbital information needed to establish contact • Time entering horizon • Horizon enter point (azimuth) • Peak elevation in degrees • Horizon exit point (azimuth) • Time exiting horizon • Reminder to synchronize clocks with timeserver.morehead.edu

  18. KySat Mode 1 Operation (cont.) • Requested dataset enters queue waiting for next opportunity for S-Band transmission • Queue is flushed to satellite with full data set including audio, time on/off, advanced/basic mode • Email confirmation of upload and aiming information is resent

KySat Mode 1 Operation (cont.) • Contact made • Mode 1a : At entrance to school horizon audio telemetry and uploaded audio file begins playing • Mode 1b : At entrance to school horizon VHF receiver begins to listen for DTMF. Upon DTMF receipt at satellite, audio telemetry and uploaded audio file begins playing • Photos taken • Mode 1a: When overhead, picture sequence begins • Mode 1b: On DTMF command begin picture sequence • On horizon exit UHF/VHF links are shut down

KySat Mode 1 Operation (cont.) • On pass over Morehead the pictures and telemetry are downloaded • Server kysat.morehead.edu builds audio file “recording” as it was played on the satellite • Server kysat.morehead.edu overlays basic contact signature on images • User requesting pass • Time of contact • KySat logo • Recording and pictures are e-mailed to user and archived on the server at Morehead State University

KySat Mode 2 Operation • User reads on-orbit user guide • User acquires hardware: • UHF/VHF antenna with diplexer • Radio • TNC (AX.25 compatible) • Computer • Aiming Equipment • Compass • Protractor with plumb bob • User reads pass times from Morehead or 3rd party software • User sets up hardware

KySat Mode 2 Operation (cont.) • User activates radio system with an initial command packet • Request type of transmission • Option a: Request send • Option b: Request receive • Interaction will reset timeout • Packet delivery • Option a: User sends packet • Option b: Satellite transmits packet • Interaction will reset timeout

KySat Mode 2 Operation (cont.) • Acknowledgment • Option a: Satellite verifies packet and returns response • Option b: User receives packets • Repeat previous three steps to send more packets • When timeout expires; deactivate transmitter • Future passes over Morehead download data files to server • Post data to website archive
