  1. Ministry Matters A Kingdom of Servants

  2. Introduction • Rev. 5:10 – “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” • Eph. 2:10 – “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

  3. A Kingdom of Servants • Servanthood is an attitude • Servanthood is a calling • Servanthood is a lifestyle

  4. 1. Servanthood is an Attitude Phil. 2:5-8 – “5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

  5. Matt. 20:25-28 – “25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  6. Do you literally DEFINE yourself by your servanthood—expect to serve every time? • Do you see yourself as owned by God and thus as a voluntary bond servant? • Are you PROUD to identify yourself as a servant. • Do you look down on those who serve in lowly ways and really respect to those “in charge”? • How do you treat servants—waitresses, tellers, clerks, janitors, house cleaners, etc.? • Do you seek to take the lowliest tasks? • Are you the first up to stack chairs, empty trash cans, sweep floors, or clean up vomit?

  7. 2. Servanthood is a Calling Eph. 4:11-12, 16 – “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up… 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

  8. Rom. 1:1 – “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God…5 Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6 And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.” John 15:16 – “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

  9. Do you recognize your decision to be saved as a calling to be a servant of the world? • Do you see your evangelism as humble service? • Do you see yourself as a son-slave, controlled by your calling and willing acceptance, or as a privileged prince or princess? • Do you see service as a privilege or as a burden?

  10. 3. Servanthood is a Lifestyle Eph. 2:10 – “10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Acts 10:37-38 – “37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

  11. Eph. 5:1-2 – “1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” 1 Pet. 2:16 – “Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.”

  12. Is your life designed to serve or do you have to carve out little bits of time to every be able to do anything for anybody else? • Do others see your life as that of a servant to the world—is service the rule or the exception in your life? • Do see to eliminate those things from your life that are merely self-serving, or do you see as your rights certain pleasures, etc., to the sacrificing of service opportunities? • Are you one who never has time to volunteer to serve? Are you the first to step up and do or give?

  13. Conclusion • We are a kingdom of servants! • Servanthood (voluntary slavery) is our very attitude as disciples! • Servanthood is the essence of our calling here! • Servanthood is the definition of our lifestyle! How can you grow in this area?
