  1. Southern colonies By: Courtney Williams • The Southern Colonies were Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. You are going to travel to these colonies and learn about the women, children, farmers, and merchants to market this region to each of these people.   3. Maryland was founded in 1633. Baltimore and Annapolis were the two most important cities in Maryland.   4. Virginia was founded in 1607 by John Smith. Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond were the major cities.   5. North Carolina was founded in 1653. Raleigh is its only major city.   7. Georgia was founded in 1732 by James Oglethorpe. Its major city is Savannah. It was named in honor of George II of England.   8. Economy • The economy in Colonial times was much different than today. Machine shops were not a part of everyday life as in present times. Farming and agriculture were the main sources of income. With this being the case, slavery was then introduced and greatly influenced the economy. • Economy • Slavery • Cash Crops List the three most important cash crops.

  9. The colonists had several reasons for coming to the new land. Many people believe it was primarily for religious freedom, however, this was not the only case. Many wanted governmental freedom. The colonists were divided into three groups: Patriots, Loyalists, and neutrals. In your journal, copy this chart and fill in the characteristics that each group stood for. Schools School House Games Parks Clothing children Children in Colonial America were in some ways very similar, and in others very different to present day. Children went to school, they played games, they even had chores. The only major differences were the types of games they played, the clothes they wore, and the chores they had to do.

  12. Women were very outnumbered in Colonial America. They were responsible for housekeeping. They cooked and cleaned and took care of the children. In the Southern colonies, many children were homeschooled, so the women were responsible for that as well.   13. Agriculture Crops Cash Crops farming Farming was the main source of income for the Southern colonies. Many people owned a lot of land and therefore decided they needed slaves to be able to work the land. Farmers began selling crops, which became known as cash crops. Some cash crops are: cotton, indigo, and rice. Why was farming so important during colonization? Is farming still important today?

  14. A merchant is a person who owns a store and buys and sells items to make their money. People in the Southern colonies owned stores and sold mostly food. People often called them the General Store. More Info... merchants Why should merchants choose the Southern Colonies?
