Clothing of the Clergy • Baptismal Robe*’+: worn during communion. Same as robe worn at baptism. • Over-robe*’: (phelonian) covers back & torso in front • Stole*’: (epitrachelion) worn when performing any pastoral duties. Made of wool. • Stole+: (orarion) stole for deacons • Cuffs*’+: keeps garments from getting in the way. Recite psalms when they are put on • Belts*’: holds up other garments. Psalms also recited when putting on.
Clothing (Hats) • Hats: The hats are worn by all clergy, including Bishops, priests, deacons, and sub-deacons. There are two types: pointed (shufya) and cylindrical (kamilavka). Both are always black or purple. The shufya is worn by those in the Russian tradition, married clergy wearing purple. Russian clergy may also wear a mitre (imperial crown) as a special distinction. The kamilavka is worn by all Greek clergy and as a special honor in other national churches. Bishops and priests wear a veil in the back of the same color.
Sacraments • Oficially called “holy mysteries” seven are recognized by the church: baptism, christmation(confirmation), eucharist, penance, matrimony, holy orders, & unction • Baptism- birth into the eternal life of God • Confirmation- gift of power to live for Christ • Eucharist-communion with life • Marriage- love becoming everlasting • Penance- forgiveness of sins • Unction- incorporation of wounds to the cross • Holy Orders- ascension to perfect life
