  1. Power consumption and electric infrastructures for OPERA • Power consumption in OPERA • Infrastructures: switchboards, power distribution, UPS • Magnet power supplies • Timeschedule for tenders • Conclusions A. Fulgenzi, F. Grianti, M. Incurvati, C. Sanelli, F. Terranova

  2. Power consumption in OPERA We were urged by LNGS director to present a detailed list of power consumption in OPERA to evaluate the overall LNGS power dissipation Loads: • Electronic detectors + BMS: mainly resistive loads. Steady power  peak power. Need very reliable power distribution infrastructures. Under UPS. 100 kW • BAM: not in Hall C and mainly under UPS. 70 kW • Magnet power supply. Baseline option: switching power supplies IGBT-based. Steady power  peak power and 80-90% 50 kW

  3. Detailed power consumption Electronic detectors: Target Tracker 19 kW x 2 SM (16 kW x 2 SM) Precision tracker 18 kW x 2 SM (15 kW x 2 SM) RPC 12 kW x 2 SM (10 kW x 2 SM) BMS 18 kW (15 kW) BAM: 70 kW  work in progress... Magnets: 25 kW x 2 SM } See note of J. Marteau Total during data taking (BAM off): 116 kW + 50 kW = 166 kW

  4. Infrastructures: UPS The MACRO UPS ("Piller") is available for OPERA • 250 kVA  about 200 kW • Located far from Hall C  dedicated switchboard in Hall C OPERA MACRO UPS Borexino Hall B Hall C Hall C

  5. Power consumption versus time Max. power consumption: magnets under mains Mid 2004: infrastructures ready for RPC tests and first magnetization

  6. Infrastructures: switchboards Existing: to be used for BAM OPERA dedicated UPS ("Piller")

  7. Infrastructures: switchboards Hall C (three phases + ground) Mains UPS SM1 SM2 100 (magnet) 100 30 (serv) 30 10 (serv) 10 SM1 SM2 70 (eldet) 70 10 (serv) 10 15 (BMS) 15 40 (magnet) 40 BAM uses existing infrastructure in Hall B: foresee plugs connected both to UPS and Mains  to be fixed together with Salvatore

  8. Magnet power supplies Main features: Imax = 1700 A ; Vmax= 20 V ; controller under UPS Baseline option: switching power supply (PS) based on IGBT Pros: Good efficiency (80-90%) No need of condenser for rephasing after transient (ramp-up and ballistic measurements) Cons: More expensive (70 kEuro per PS ?) Noisy at low frequencies IGBT generally employed at higher voltages Backup option: linear PS Pros: cheaper (50 kEuro per PS) no switching frequencies to be filtered Cons: poor efficiency (50%) (40 kW x 2 SM) need rephasing condensers after transient high peak power consumption (64 kW x 2 SM)

  9. 0.5m MaPMTs Magnet power supply 2m Control room TT power supply RPC racks Cable tray hubs spectrometer spectrometer TT TT Magnet power supplies: location Water-cooled (infrastructures)

  10. Tendering Power supply: Specs: Ready by end of May Tender: Start in September 1st PS @ LNGS before summer 2004 Switchboard in Hall C (under the responsibility of LNGS - A. Fulgenzi): Our request are fixed since April and sent to LNGS people Hopefully ready before April 2004 Switchboard in Hall B: no need for tendering but modification needed. To be discussed with LNGS and BAM people.

  11. Conclusions • OPERA needs dedicated infrastructures in Hall C (two switchboards located at the entrance of the hall). Specs are now fixed and sent to LNGS services. • Other infrastructures can be recycled: • UPS from MACRO • Switchboards in Hall B for BAM • Power supplies specs are fixed and tendering is going to start
