2. Textbook Our book is Literature: Language and Literacy, published by Prentice Hall. The text will be supplemented with novel studies.

3. Reading Logs Students must read outside school at least 100 minutes a week. To document, parents are asked to sign the student’s Reader’s Log. Logs are checked in class every Monday. They are located in the student agenda.

4. SRI To determine each student’s reading level, SRI will be administered. This diagnostic deals primarily with comprehension. SRI will be administered at least three times a year. This assessment determines the lexile level of the student.

What is Reading Counts? • A computerized reading management system which increases reading by • Enhancing Curriculum • Motivating students at all reading levels • Developing critical-thinking skills • Boosting scores on reading tests including performance based assessments • Providing performance reports which aid in individualized instruction.

6. 12 Books This Year! Our curriculum requires students to read twelve grade-appropriate books during the school year. Students should read at least three books within their lexile range each quarter. 7. Do the Dewey A copy of the Do the Dewey form is located in the student agenda. It requires that the student read a selection of fiction and nonfiction books throughout the year. After a book is completed, the student will take a Reading Counts test in order to receive credit. The score must be 70 or above. Students may take a test twice.

8. Grade Determination Grades are calculated as follows: Class work, Homework 25% Reader’s Log   20%  Quiz Grades 20% Tests, Major Assignments 35%

9. If my child has to read 12 books, is that number divided among the 4 quarters? Yes. The number of required books is divided per quarter, with the total equaling twelve by the end of the year. 1st Q = 3 books 2nd Q = 3 books 3rd Q =3 books 4th Q = 3 books

10. When will my child be allowed to go to the Media Center? Students may go before homeroom (8:00 – 8:20), during reading class when time permits, and when I take them as a class(which will be every other Monday). Computer labs are also open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

11. What curriculum will be covered? We follow the curriculum map provided by CCSD that correlates with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards: English Language Arts. These can be accessed on the Cherokee County website.
