  3. Big Ideas • Where are we going this year? • Further develop basic skills in order to be successful in Pre-Algebra. • Develop and apply problem solving strategies. • Students will know how to manage their time. • Students will be able to tie mathematics back to real-life situations.

  4. Homework and Grading • The purpose of homework is for practice • Expect multiple times per week • Please contact teacher if homework is taking more than 30 minutes • Grades are weighted 50% Minor and 50% Major • Minor grades consist of Daily Work • Major grades are Unit Tests and Projects

Homework • Science homework is most often unfinished class work or makeup work from absences. • If your child is spending more than 20 minutes on science homework, please contact your child’s teacher. If this is the case, your child may be experiencing difficulty with the subject matter, or not using class time wisely. • Homework Club will be available in the library before and after school. (7:15-7:35 and 2:50-3:30) • Tutoring will be available by appointment.

Grading Policy • To better prepare students for middle school, grading policy for sixth graders is based on the average of major and minor grades. • 50% of a students grade will be minor grades and 50% will • be major grades. • Minor grades consist of formative activities such as class work, class participation, and minor labs. • Major grades consist of summative activities, such as major labs, tests, and projects.

A day in the life… • (We seek to make science relevant) • In sixth grade science we seek to engage all learners by incorporating many different activities, such as: • Solving problems by designing investigations • Collecting and recording data • Constructing tables and graphs • Communicating conclusions • Predicting outcomes and trends • Learning note-taking skills • Constructing models • Designing and implementing science inquiries using appropriate equipment and technology

  14. How do I support my child? • Power School • School Town • Agenda/Planner • Science Binder • Science Journal • Talk with your child about science • Science is all around you and children this age are curious and want to know.
