  4. events • Fought for autonomy- self government • Set up patrols and encouraged racial and cultural pride • Protest march in South Dakota • 1961- the Seneca fought back when the government tried to build on their land • 1972- demonstrators traveled to DC and they occupied the bureau of Indian Affairs for 6 days

  5. response • Kennedy tried to bring jobs to reservations • Laws were passed to promote Native American rights • Indian Education act of 1972 gave parents control over schools • Indian self-determination and education act of 1975 gave support to Indians in education and housing
