Understanding Native American Beliefs and Literature: Nature, Myths, and Respect for Life

Native Americans held profound respect for the natural world, believing that every creature possessed its own power to maintain existence and influence others. Central to their belief system was the "Manito," or Great Spirit, which served as a source of life. Their literature emphasizes nature and explains various social customs and natural phenomena through origin myths and creation stories. These narratives, rooted in oral tradition, narrate the world's creation and human life’s beginnings, conveying wisdom from one generation to the next.
