  2. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Marr • Community • Forums • Feb 2011

  3. Renewable Energy in the Community • TARGETS: • Carbon Neutral as an Authority (eg. by 2020) • Carbon Neutral as a Region by (eg. by 2030)

  4. Renewable Energy in the Community • Economic Development Priorities to 2011: • Objective 6: • Be nationally recognised for the self-sufficient and inclusive communities in its area. • Action 6.1: • Assist all larger rural partnerships in gaining an asset to produce income that can fund rural partnership work. • (Eg. Some community partnerships are now receiving income from wind farms.)

  5. Renewable Energy in the Community • Helping communities to be • self-sufficient….. • Reduce Energy Use • Use Renewable Energy (where practical)

  6. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Village Halls…….. • ……Rural Pressures

  7. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Village Halls……..

  8. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Village Halls……..

  9. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Aims and Objectives • To make community halls more sustainable by making them more energy efficient and where practical, deploy renewable energy technologies. • To support the formation of a group of community halls interested in carrying forward renewable energy projects. • Where possible provide an asset that will also generate an income for the community.

  10. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Aims and Objectives • To raise awareness of climate change issues, and Aberdeenshire Council’s sustainability goals. • To raise awareness of energy efficiency measures and renewable energy options for domestic properties that will help to combat fuel poverty, reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate against the causes of climate change. • To promote the use of locally sourced materials and strengthen skills and employment opportunities.

  11. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Partners – • Alan Beedie • SCHRI Development Officer • Kevin Christie • Technical Officer

  12. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • (Phase I)…. • 9 seminars – • Arbuthnott, Ballater, Whitehills, Crathes, Methlick, Rathen, Kemnay, Alford, Fetterangus.

  13. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • (Phase II)…. • An Energy Audit for each Hall • Identify Energy-efficiency measures • Identify Renewable Heat & Power opportunities

  14. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Over Eighty Halls • Have Joined the Initiative…..

  16. Marr Halls

  17. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Marr – 21 Halls in the Group…

  18. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Name… • That Hall

  19. Renewable Energy in the Community McRobert Memorial Hall Tarland 1951

  20. Renewable Energy in the Community Glenbuchat Hall 1899

  21. Renewable Energy in the Community Aboyne & Glen Tanar Memorial Hall Aboyne Circa 1920

  22. Aberdeenshire Sustainable Community Halls Initiative • Next Steps (Phase IlI)…. • A Series of Workshops in each area • Identify projects for each Hall to carry forward

  23. Renewable Energy in the Community • Energy Efficiency Measures – • Lighting • Insulation • Draught-Proofing • Double Glazing • Heating Controls

  24. Renewable Energy in the Community • Renewable Energy – • The Technologies…..

  25. Feed-In Tariffs…. • Scheme started April 2010 • Replaces ROCs (<5MW) • Incentivise small-scale generators • <50kW must use MCS • Tariffs linked to RPI • Exported Electricity 3p/kWh guarantee

  26. Renewable Energy in the Community • Wind

  27. Renewable Energy in the Community • Wind

  28. Example: • FIS Chemicals • 11kW • GAIA Turbine • Av. Wind • 5.1 m/s • Load Factor • 20% • CO2 Saving • 12t

  29. Example: • 11kW Wind Turbine • Load Factor: 20% • Annual Generation = 19,272kWh • (80% electricity used on site, 20% exported to grid) • Feed-in-Tariff = 26.7p x 19,272 = £5,145 • Elec exported = 5.0p x 4,837 = £ 242 • Elec saving = 10.0p x 15,418 = £1,542 • Total = £6,929

  30. Example: • Enercon E33 • 330kW • Rotor Diam. • 33.4m • Hub Height • 37 – 50m

  31. Example: • 330kW Wind Turbine • Load Factor: 30% • Annual Generation = 867,240kWh • Feed-in-Tariff = 18.8p x 867,240 = £163,041 • Elec exported = 5.0p x 867,240 = £ 43,362 • Total = £206,403

  32. Renewable Energy in the Community • Solar – Photo Voltaic

  33. Renewable Energy in the Community • Hydro

  34. Example: • 10kW Hydro installation • Capacity Factor: 65% • Annual Generation = 56,940kWh • (all exported to grid) • Feed-in-Tariff = 19.9p x 56,940 = £11,331 • Elec exported = 5p x 56,940 = £ 2,847 • Total = £14,178

  35. Renewable Heat Incentive…. • Spending Review 20 October 2010 • £850m direct Government support • Comes into effect July 2011 • ROI 12% on additional cost • (6% for Solar Thermal) • MCS Certified installers for small/medium • Installations after 15 July 2009 qualify
