  2. What we would like to do today Tell you about the recent community meetings Provide you with a summary of what we heard from parents, educators and community members during these meetings Get you to think about what the implications are for the RSD’s plans and priorities

  3. Three forums took place 5/18 McDonogh #35, East Bank 5/23 Oak Park Baptist Church, Algiers 5/24 Mary Queen of Vietnam Church, N.O. East

  4. In total ~300 people attended community forums Parents Educators Community Members 40% 44% 16% 83 people filled out comment cards 59 made comments or asked questions in meetings

Many people wanted to know more information about process and timelines Parents Educators Community Members • Where will schools be? • How do I register my child for school? • How do I apply for a job? • Why is there additional screening/testing? • Will schools in our community be opened? • How can community members participate in the process?

There were also much broader questions – the kind without easy answers Parents Educators Community Members • Will schools be good enough to bring my children back to New Orleans? • How should I decide where to send my child to school? • How will you make sure that schools really will be better for teaching and learning? • How will you ensure equity? • How will you ensure the community has a voice in the process?

Top concerns for parents Fairness • Make sure all parents have the information they need to decide where to send their children to school • Use fair and transparent rules for enrolling children • Schools that are as good as, or better than other districts • Make sure schools can meet the needs of all their students • Make all schools good schools • Make sure you have schools in all neighborhoods where people are returning • Find more ways to help parents to stay informed and involved in their child’s education Quality Schools Equity More ways to stay involved

Top concerns for educators Fairness • Ensure a fair hiring process, especially for veteran teachers • Ensure teachers are involved in RSD planning process • Make curriculum relevant and rigorous • Keep low student – teacher ratios • Find better ways to get parents involved • Provide high quality special education • Provide help to manage discipline/behavior • Offer relevant, job-embedded professional development • Ensure adequate time for planning Quality Schools Meet all students needs Teaching environment

Top concerns for the community Re-opening schools • Ensure schools are located in neighborhoods where people are returning • Repair them to be better than pre-Katrina • Maintain open access for schools • Ensure parents have information to make informed choice • Distribute resources across schools equitably • Expand community engagement efforts • Programs to help students to catch up • Programs to help parents help kids Equity More ways to be involved Programs to help students
