  1. Exposure therapy: A gold standard for PTSD treatment Sheila A. M. Rauch, PhD; Afsoon Eftekhari, PhD; Josef I. Ruzek, PhD

  2. Aim • Examine evidence supporting clinical practice guideline update and use of exposure therapy (ET), specifically prolonged exposure (PE). • Relevance • PE is most widely studied manualized version of ET for PTSD and is currently being disseminated in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense as first-line intervention for PTSD.

  3. Methods • PE protocol includes 4 main therapeutic components: • Psychoeducation. • In vivo exposure. • Imaginal exposure. • Emotional processing.

  4. Results • PE is effective in reducing PTSD and related issues including depression, anger, guilt, and negative health perceptions. • PE is effective for PTSD resulting from single and multiple incident traumas of all types. • VA designed and supported PE training program for mental health professionals: • Trained more than 1,300 providers.

  5. Conclusions • Research examining mechanisms involved in PE and working to improve its acceptability, efficacy, and efficiency is underway with promising results.
