If the budget situation improves before June 30, 2009, we will be able to spend the reserve amount. We are unable to purchase books, av materials , periodicals and equipment. We still maintain our current hours and we are still able to fill vacant positions.

  21. Senator Andrew C. Brock with Special Davie County Library Visitors Senator Andrew C. Brock

  22. Roanoke Rapids Public Library We had 20,772 visits between the months of July and December of last year, up nearly 3 % despite our hours being cut back 8 hours a week during the summer months and 4 hours during the school year months reflecting a loss of hours of 8.5%. Our circulation has been 37,196 down 6.7% from last year but less than the percentage of hours we have been cut. Our computer use for this six month period is 5,311 down from 5,959 the same period the previous year or about 11%. During part of the last year, we were without the Internet almost two weeks and there has been a significant amount of time when one station of our seven has been out of order. Over the last few months, I have noticed an increased amount of time our stations have been full and there has been a waiting list. Often, when people have to wait, they do not stay for their turn. In addition to the 7% cut in State Aid, our library incurred a 3% cut in our City budget. We lost a full-time position when I was promoted in May of last year to Head Librarian reducing our full time staffing from 5 to 4. Our part time hours have remained at 80 per week. The reduction of a position resulted in our need to cut operating hours. With our challenges, our library remains a place for resources and informational services to provide educational, recreational, and cultural growth opportunities to the citizens we serve.

  23. U.S. Rep. Howard Coble and NC Rep. Jerry Dockham Visit Denton Library Davidson County Representative Jerry C. Dockham

  24. Davidson County Public Library Comparison Stats between calendar year 2007 and 2008: • Library visits up 11% • Circulation up 11% • New Borrowers up 20% • Hold Requests up 39% • Computer usage is up but can’t give you an accurate number because we changed the way we counted between 2007 and 2008. Funding cuts: • 1.5% reduction in local budget --any additional cuts will result in reduction of hours and staff • Rolling freeze on vacant positions • Flat budget projected for next fiscal year • Salaries frozen for next fiscal year • Locally sales tax revenue is down • State Aid represents about 1% of our local Library budget, the 7% decrease has exacerbated budget reductions.

  29. Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County -Circulation is up 8.5% over last year. -Reference statistics are up almost 20% to date. -As of February 2, all positions have been frozen for at least the duration of the current fiscal. -Also, as of February 2, we were asked to return an amount equal to 15% of all unspent/unencumbered county funds in the non-personnel areas of the budget: approximately $382k. This was done through a corresponding reduction in that amount in the collection and supplies areas of the budget. -We have been asked to develop a budget for FY2010 that could potentially mean up to an overall 20% reduction in county funding support (or $7M), which would be close to catastrophic in terms of its likely impact on staffing, materials and hours of library operations.

  34. BHM Regional LibraryBeaufort, Hyde, Martin Counties Amazing increases in statistics since September, particularly at our smaller branches Cuts in state funds have had a devastating effect on our materials budget, which has been steadily decreasing over the past eight years. We no longer have funds for DVDs, audiobooks, or Large Print books, or McNaughton lease plans (which ensures bestsellers for the branches). Our periodicals are cut by 50%; the children's book budget is cut by 70%, regular adult books also down 70%. The Summer Reading Program will be affected: we will not be able to fund a special performer for the Region, nor will we be able to purchase special prizes for the children.
