Advances in Communications Strategies OGC-MINSA • Project Support for the Preparedness and Response Plan to a potential Avian Influenza Pandemic in Peru. • Opportunity for financing by the Centers for Disease Prevention–CDC Atlanta. • Communication materials validation in three priority areas of the country: Arequipa, Puno, Iquitos. • Signing of Agreement with the National Service of Agrarian Health – Ministry of Agriculture (SENASA) and the Peruvian Association of Poultry Farming (`food safety`).

  9. Advances in Communications Strategies OGC-MINSA • 161,000 prints: graphic design materials distributed to the 34 Health Departments (DISAS) and Regional Health Departments (DIRESAS) at the national level: posters, pamphlets, leaflets, stickers.

  15. 2, 500 pamphlets for breeders of backyard birds • Audience: breeders of backyard birds • Content: basic advise for breeding healthy birds

  16. 2,500 pamphlets for fight cock breeders • Audience: fight cock breeders • Content: basic biosafety advice for raising fight cocks

  17. 2,000 stickers • Audience: wholesale food market vendors • Content: health certification

Communication Achievements • Realization of the PREVENTION ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN COVER YOURSELF UPON COUGHING AND SNEEZING through Mass Media with an approximate investment of US $60,600 (between production of advertising components and media guidelines). • Outbreak Communication Training of Diresas-MINSA Communicators performed in a decentralized manner. Subsequently, at the local level, similar trainings were carried out (example: Yunguyo, Puno). • At the Ministry of Health level there was an approval for an additional year of the project with CDC, which will have a communications component: to continue the prevention campaign, documentary production, printing of new communication materials, and will count on technical support from PAHO.

  19. Challenges • Reactivate the work of the Multisectoral Commission of Planning against the pandemic influenza, with participation of different sector communicators. Reappraise work of Communicators. • Support the General Bureau of Communications-MINSA in order to continue the development of plans even without having a established budget. • Perform advocacy functions and the establishment of the pandemic influenza issue on the political agenda in order to influence decision makers and generate joint activities. • Search for partners in the private sector and train the media in order to achieve support in the dissemination of preventive messages for the population and throughout the stages considered by the WHO.
