  2. Objective • Evaluate the usefulness of Skidabrator, Rejuvenator, and Joint Bond on differing pavement surfaces, varying ages, and mix types to see if they are warranted for use as a Preventative Maintenance Measure on KYTC Roadways.

  3. Selection of Test Sections • Section 1: • 15 yr old CL4 SMA 0.50A PG76-22 • AC Content 7.3 Percent • Granite • Section 2: • 2014 (3 yr old) - CL4 SMA 0.38A PG 76-22 • AC Content 6.6 Percent no Rap • Dolomite • Section 3: • 6 Month old CL4 SMA 0.38A PG 76-22 • AC Content 6.2 percent with 6 percent Rap • Dolomite

  4. Test Sections for Each Surface • 16 Test Sections • The sections consisted of Rejuvenator, Skidabrator, Joint Bond, and combinations of each. • We also use different application rates for each section • Section have been signed for future reference

  6. Surface Texturing

  7. Each Skidabrader unit blasts bird-shot size steel pellets onto the surface at 750 fps within its confined “blasting box”. The pellets and abraded material are vacuumed and separated via the unit’s unique vacuum system.

  8. The steel pellets are equivalent in size to shotgun birdshot.

  9. Then, specially designed electro-magnet trucks pass over the abraded area to pickup any steel pellets that may have remained on the pavement surface.

  10. The shot blasting process chips the top of the exposed aggregate creating additional “sharp” faces that improve the surface skid resistance and surface micro-texture.

  11. DUST

  12. Skid numbers have already been determined and will be obtained once surface abrasion has been completed and right after rejuvenator agent has been placed and 3 to 5 days after. KYTC will continue to monitor for the next 5 years.

  13. CL2 Asph Surf 0.38D PG64-22 with Rap Skid values comparable to HFS Skid Value dropped 5 points over 5 weeks

  14. Rejuvenator • Mix Design • Manufacture Recommendation • Absorption rate of less than 60 minutes • 0.05 gal per SQYD and 0.06 gal per SQYD • 0.05 absorbed in 30 min • 0.06 absorbed in 45 min • We selected the .05 gal/min and applied the 0.05 gal/min for the 1st mile. We then increase the rate to .0.6 gal/min due to absorption rate. 0.05 gallons per SQYD 0.06 gallons per SQYD

  15. What is a“Joint Stabilizer?” • Joint Stabilizer is a Polymerized Maltene Emulsion formulated to penetrate the longitudinal joint area quickly and to fortify the weakest area in new asphalt construction.

  16. Joint Bond Polymers

  17. Longitudinal Joint Stabilizer

  18. Joint Stabilizer penetrates into the pavement carrying the maltenes along with its unique polymers down into the upper 1/2” - 3/4” of the pavement where it restores flexibility and cohesive property of the AC while also reinforcing the treated area.

  19. Core Samples The cores are lab tested to determine the level of improvement in the asphalt cement’s viscosity and elastic modulus. 48 Cores were taken to determine DSR Values which includes control section. Testing of cores just getting started this month

  20. Goals • DSR testing • Skid Testing to monitor usefulness of Skidabrator • Crack Measurments • Visual Performance of increased surface life.

  21. Estimated Cost Break Down • Surface texturing: • 95885 SQYD @ $2 = $191770 • Rejuvenator: • 95885 SQYD @ $0.89 = $85338 • Longitudinal Joint Stabilizer: • 90296 LNFT @ $0.49 = $44245 • Pavement Striping: • 59544 LNFT @ $0.26 = $15481 • Total Cost = $336834

  22. Comparison Cost of Rejuvenator as compared to Micro Surfacing and Asphalt Surface No. 4A. Based off two contracts that was let on Hal Rogers Parkway. Rejuvenating project doesn’t have to remove pavement markers, thermo., and milling. Rejuvenator = $2.98/SYYD MicroSurfacing = $5.74 /SYYD No. 4 Surface = $4.95/SYYD

  23. Try Video • Special Thanks • Preventative Maintenance Partners • Billy Clements (Drone Video) • Tamara Bumgardner (DSR Testing and Drone) • Joe Link (Skid Testing) • Praneeth Nimmatoori (Laser Crack Measurement) • Drew Dowden (Go Pro Video) • Ronnie Corum (Signs)
