College Career Readiness Standards • These standards are “what our children learn” in school. They are the basic skills that children in Indiana should be able to do. • Challenging curriculum taught by all 4 teachers, yet they may use different materials
Language Arts • Houghton Mifflin Stories • Trade Books (picture, chapter books, JGB short stories) • Good-Fit Books (independent reading) • Reading and Writing for • different reasons: • (fiction and non-fiction) • Narrative, Informative, • and Persuasive Writings
What is fluency? • Ability to read quickly and easily • Students who don’t read smoothly have to work hard to figure out the words. This interferes with understanding. • (handout)
Instruction is whole group, small group, and individual using an approach called the Daily 5. • Model how good readers think about reading • Title 1 resources are available for those students who need the extra support. We re-evaluate students several times during the year.
Accelerated Reader • Use fall scores to determine goals and reading range • Guides students to pick books that “fit” • Research supports reading at the bottom part of your level for the most growth. As fluency, accuracy, and comprehension increase, you know it’s time to move up. • Helps teachers to monitor growth
Math • Know + and – facts fluently • Move from Rocket Math to Sprints • Addition and Subtraction with regrouping • Number Bonds 12 • 5 + 7 = 12 • 7 + 5 = 12 • 12 – 5 = 7 • 12 – 7 = 5 7
Homework • Reading every night • Practice math facts until they are automatic. • Learn spelling words and spelling patterns. • Skill Review Papers
Study Trips • Barker Mansion • City of Portage • Guest Speakers • Be sure to get a background check early for participation in trips and other classroom events.
Other • Be sure to check the green communication folder nightly. • Send money in an envelope marked with name and purpose. • Water bottle permitted in spill-proof container. • Second graders do not have snack time.
