  5. Angela Cunningham Facts at a Glance: Education: MFA Penn State: Ceramics Ceramics: Work is inspired by nature Important details in work: Color, surface, texture, and minute (borderline painful) detail Fun Fact: began working in ceramics at the suggestion of her high school counselor during Saturday detention Artist statement: I make objects that beg to be touched. Through exquisite detailing, my pieces draw viewers near, desiring to explore. As much as I want to engage, though, I equally want to push away. The beauty of the object is often tempered by bits of the grotesque. The imagery in my pieces is drawn largely from forms in nature. More and more, my obsessive process feeds the content of my work. I have given myself over to investment. Every part is sensitively considered, well-loved; details are rendered with an attentiveness that borders on obsession. I strive to capture a sense of exquisiteness in its richest definition Blue Foam 9.75in x 5in, white stoneware, cone 10 oxidation, glaze, underglaze

  7. Brainstorming •Start with object from nature •Abstract it through drawing 4 times •The end drawing is inspiration for your final coil vessel

  8. Sketching from Nature

  9. The Act of Abstracting--worksheet practice

  10. Negative Space in Forms--5 sketches of variety in form

  11. What object from nature will you use as inspiration for your coil vessel?

  12. Objects from nature that inspire me

  13. Abstracted forms Inspired by Nature--what do you notice about shape, form, attachments, & color?

  14. Handbuilding with Coils Coil Pot Step by Step

  15. Project Procedures 1.Choose a natural object (shell, pine cones, seed pods, flower, etc..) 2.Draw one realistic pencil drawing - include value shading 3.Abstract form at least 4 times emphasizing specific elements and principles 4.Create two mini models in clay of 2D drawing into 3D sculpture 5.Choose one mini model and enlarge to a full scale ceramic piece 6.Construct organic form with the coil method and other hand building techniques. Forms can be supported temporarily with newspaper. Adapt and alter as the form grows. 7.Allow to dry - bisque fire - glaze with earth tone glazes (Amaco textured and luster glazes look nice - also high fire stoneware glazes.)

  16. Coil Vessel Requirements - Form inspired by abstracting an object from nature - Quality craftsmanship - 50% texture--pressed or carved - at least 2 attachments - focus on the negative spaces (shapes and form evident in the negative space rather than the positive space)
