  4. Review the Technique • Five pairs of alternating unstressed and stressed syllables • The rhythm in each line sounds like: ba-BUM / ba-BUM / ba-BUM / ba-BUM / ba-BUM • Use these markings (^/) ^= unstressed /= stressed syllable

Other Metric Feet • Trochee (tro-key) is stressed/unstressed /^ • Anapest ^^/ • Dactyl /^^ Iambic and anapestic meters are called rising meters because their movement rises from unstressed syllable to stressed; trochaic and dactylic meters are called falling. In the twentieth century, the bouncing meters--anapestic and dactylic--have been used more often for comic verse than for serious poetry.

  6. APPLY THE TECHNIQUE • Take the poem in front of you and mark it up for the rhyme scheme at the end of the lines (aa,bb, etc.) • Mark up the iambs using the proper markings of ^/ • Is it a Shakespearean sonnet.
