  2. Rapid furfural test • To study the dehydration of carbohydrates • It is for ketosugars

  3. Reagents • Concentrated HCl • 5% alcoholic alphanaphthol

  4. principle • When carbohydrates are treated with non oxidizing acids dehydration takes place and colorless Hydroxymethyl furfural compounds are formed which condensed with the indicator to give colour

  5. procedure • Take 3ml of carbohydrate solution in a test tube • Add 3 to 4 drops of 5% alphnapthol and 3ml of conc. HCl. • Mix it and boil for 30 sec.

  6. Interpretation • Deep brown colour will be produced in case of presence of keto sugars
