Deuteronomy 20:16–18 • 16 “But of the cities of these peoples which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive, 17 but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as the Lord your God has commanded you, 18lest they teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you sin against the Lord your God.

The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Judah • Judges 1:16 (NKJV) …the children of the Kenite…with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah…and dwelt among the people. • Judges 1:19 • So the LORD was with Judah…but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had chariots of iron.

  4. The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Benjamin • Judges 1:21 • But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

  5. The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Manasseh • Judges 1:27 • However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.

  6. The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Ephraim • Judges 1:29 • Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

  7. The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Zebulun • Judges 1:30 • Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute.

  8. The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Asher • Judges 1:31 • Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.

The Jews Grow Indifferent to God’s Commands • Naphtali • Judges 1:33 • Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.

  10. Notice a Trend… • Judges 1:28 • And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.

  11. Notice a Trend… • Judges 1:30 • Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute.

  12. Notice a Trend… • Judges 1:33 • Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anathwere put under tribute to them.

  13. Notice a Trend… • Judges 1:35 • and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they were put under tribute.

  14. The Restoration Movement Stood On Principles Such As… • “We speak where the Bible speaks and we’re silent where the Bible is silent.” • “We call Bible things by biblical names and do Bible things in Bible ways.” • “In matters of faith, unity. In matters of opinion, liberty. In all things love.” • “No creed but Christ. No law but the Lord’s. No book but the Bible. No name but the Master’s.” • “The Bible makes Christians only and the only Christians.”

But today we are hearing arguments such as… • “I think…” (Opinion) • “Don’t preach on __________ because it might offend someone.” (Are we afraid to call error, error as the Bible does?) • Refrences to things in unbiblical names and doing things in ways not described in the Bible • “That’s just your interpretation.” • “One man’s opinion is just as good as another in matters of religion.” • “We’ve always done it this way so it must stay that way.” • Unwritten Creeds • One can practice error, attend a congregation that does things that are not scriptural and yet some wonder, “Are they truly Christians?”

  16. Are We Becoming Indifferent? • In the Realm of Evangelism? • Jude 23 (NKJV) 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

  17. Are We Becoming Indifferent? In the Realm of Sin? • Sins of omission (Jgs. 1) • Worldliness (Tit. 2:12) • Political Correctness (Jn. 12:43) • Strife (Jas. 3) • Jealousy (Gal. 5:20) • Outbursts of wrath (Gal. 5:20) • Dissensions (Gal. 5:20) • Selfish ambitions (Gal. 5:20) • Gossip (1 Tim. 5:13) • Pride (1 Jn. 2:16)…

  18. Are We Becoming Indifferent? In the Realm of Sin? Glorying in men (i.e. Preacher Worship – 1 Cor. 3:21) Envy (1 Pet. 2:1) Being Hypocritical (Mat. 7) Idolatry (Col. 3:5) Uncleanness (Col. 3:5) Passion (Col. 3:5) Evil Desire (Col. 3:5) Cowardliness (Rev. 21:8) These things are sin too!

  19. Are We Becoming Indifferent? In the Realm of restoring a sinning Christian? Galatians 6:1 (NKJV) 1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

  20. Are We Becoming Indifferent? In the Realm of thirsting for knowledge? 2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV) 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

  21. What Jesus Said One Must Do To Be Saved • “…he who hearsMy word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life…” (John 5:24) • “…if you do not believethat I am He, you will die in your sins.“ (John 8:24) • “I tell you, no; but unless you repentyou will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3) • “…whoever confessesMe before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” (Mat. 10:32-33) • "He who believes and is baptizedwill be saved…” (Mark 16:16) • “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you…” (John 15:14 – live a faithful life) • “…Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
