  2. Beginnings • Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) initiative --2005 • Implementation of Advisor/Advisee—2007 • Once a semester through character education

  3. Mustang Mentors • 2011-2012 • Full Scale implementation with once a month sessions • Each staff member has a small group (12-15 students) • Topics generated by students and teachers • Teachers loop with their students • Groups are grade specific

  5. Clubs • Begun in Spring of 2011 • Monthly meetings • Clubs are not grade specific • Entire school moves at one time to clubs • Students have choice of a club • Run by two teachers • Trying to make clubs match student interests

Men of Distinction • Begun as an After School organization for At-Risk young men • Originally boys were hand-picked to join, now anyone can joinwith a parent’s permission • Monthly meetings • Facilitated by Mr. Partee and Mr. Chavous • Learn life skills such as how to change a tire, check oil in a car, tie a tie, and how to cook breakfast. • Had first lock in this spring. • Practice positive behavior and discipline

Girls on Track • Middle School program for Girls on the Run • Girls must apply and pay an enrollment fee • Meets twice weekly • Sponsored by various teachers, interns, and guidance • Character building lessons • Students slowly build up to a 5K • Two sessions per year • Buddy runners • Kids who hate PE participate in GOT and LOVE IT!

  12. Peer Tutoring • Meets each day across from the cafeteria– easy access for students—from 7:40-8:05 • Teachers recommend students to be tutors • Any student can come in for help • Tutors teach students study skills such as using flash cards to study vocabulary.

  13. Teacher mentors • Middle School concept of teams allows team teachers to work together to better reach students • ESOL students check in with ESOL teacher each morning about homework or other needs they may have
