  2. Sacrament A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.

  3. Baptism • Washes away all sin and pours the life of grace into the soul. • Matter: threefold pouring or immersion with water • Form: the words “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” • Scripture: Mt 28:18-20 and Jn 3:5

  4. Confirmation It is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and his gifts and a maturation of faith for full initiation into the Church. Matter: laying of hands and anointing with chrism. Form: “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Scripture: Jn 20:21-22, Acts 2:1-4, and Acts 8:14-17.

  5. Eucharist It is the presence of Christ, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, made present in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Matter: bread and wine Form: “This is my body… This is the cup of My Blood.” Scripture: Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-25; Lk 22:7-20; Jn 6:25-71 and Lk 24:13-53.

  6. Penance Through the confession of sins to a priest, absolution is given for the forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism. Matter: contrition, confession, and satisfaction. Form: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.: Scripture: Jn 20:19-23 and Mt 16:13-19.

  7. Anointing of the Sick Through the anointing and prayers of a priest, a person receives healing of soul and possible of body and is prepared for union with God. Matter: anointing with oil and laying of hands. Form: Prayer of anointing Scripture: Jas 5:13-16; Jn 9:1-7 and Mk 2:1-12.

  8. Holy Orders Holy Orders is when a man is ordained to ministry for the Church as a deacon, priest, or bishop. Matter: laying of hands Form: prayer of ordination Scripture: Lk 22:19; Heb 5:1-10

  9. Matrimony Matrimony is when a man and woman are united for life for the goods of marriage. Matter: man and woman consent Form: vows Scripture: Mt 19:3-12 and Eph 5:25-32
