  4. Learning Outcomes for Unit 9 • Assess the value of children's experiences in the inclusive classroom • Assess the value of family experiences as a result of the inclusive classroom • Analyze the characteristics of an effective Early Childhood Care Professional

  5. Inclusion • Definition: Children with special needs attend preschool, child care, and recreational programs with their typically developing peers. (Allen & Cowdery, 2009)

  6. Virtual Field Trip • Find the article “Special needs, ‘mainstream’ classroom” in the web resources from Unit 9. • Take 5 minutes to read the article. • Share: What are the benefits of inclusion for children with disabilities? And for children without disabilities?

Benefits of Inclusion • Benefits: • Children with and without disabilities make gains in development • Those with disabilities benefit from social interaction • Those without disabilities develop more positive attitudes • High quality curriculum and individual supports are needed to optimize benefits (Allen & Cowdery, 2009)

  9. Curriculum Modifications • Curriculum modifications: Adaptations and accommodations to classroom activities, routines, and learning areas to include children with disabilities in classrooms and to enhance their participation. (Allen & Cowdery, 2009)

  10. Curriculum Modifications • Locate the table on pp. 625-626 of our text. • Take 5 minutes to read it over. • Share: Explain three (3) types of modifications you may use as an Early Childhood Care Professional. Explain how you would use these.
