In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act came into effect. It broadened and extended the civil rights protection for all Americans with disabilities outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
According to 7 CFR 15b, when a child s disabilities interferes with his/her ability to eat a regular meal, a substitution must be made when that need is certified by a licensed physician.
FNS Instruction 783-2, Rev 2 provides guidance to us on meal substitutions for medical and other special dietary reasons.

Food Allergies
Metabolic Disease
Diabetes (DM)
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
