  2. Early Life • Born somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains three weeks after the death of his father • No formal education, taught himself law although his mom wanted him to be a minister • Fought and cussed too much

  3. Jackson and American Revolution • He enlisted when he was just thirteen and ended up a war prisoner. • Suffered from small pox while in prison. • Jackson received an injury for a commander’s sword when he refused to shine his boots. • His mother arranged for a prisoner exchange but his brother did not survive.

  4. Married Life • He married a woman that was already married though she didn’t know it! • Rachel Donelson thought she was divorced, they got married, then found out she was still married. • She finally got a divorce and they remarried again. • People continuously called her bigamists.

  5. Jackson’s Inauguration • Wife never lived in the White House, was buried on Christmas Eve in her inauguration gown. • His niece served as his first lady. • 20,000 people came to the White House for the inauguration party • Believed he was the President for the common man. (THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT)

  6. Partying in the White House, breaking china and furniture! • Ladies fainting, men fighting, cursing, raising the roof! • Servants in the White House passed liquor and ice cream out the windows so the crowd would follow and go outside. • It Worked!!!!! • Most memorable party ever………. • “The Reign of King Mob seemed triumphant!”

  7. What was the country like? • South relied heavily on slave labor to survive. • The North was large scale factories. • The Democratic party was a result of Jackson supporters. • Spoils System: rewarding supporters with jobs

  8. Tariff of Abominations • Tariffs became one of the first issues Jackson faced • British companies were driving American companies out of business because they could manufacture more cheaply • Before Jackson took office, Congress placed high tariff on imports • This angered the southerners • Abomination means a hateful thing

  9. States’ Rights Doctrine • John C. Calhoun protested for South Carolina to leave the union • Supporters of SRD felt states power should be greater than federal power • Calhoun felt states had the right to nullify or reject any federal law they judged to be unconstitutional • He ended up resigning as Vice President

  10. McCulloch V. Maryland • Supreme Court case that ruled that a national bank was unconstitutional • Jackson greatly opposed the national bank • He said, “I will kill it”! • Jackson sent the country into economic trouble. • Panic of 1837, the country experienced a severe economic depression
