  1. ISAC Contribution to SST activity ISAC contribution to SST activity during the first 18 months of Project will coincides with the work funded by MFSTEP and Medspiration: • Improving the MFS SST observing system • Providing in NRT daily SST objectively interpolated maps during and after MFSTEP TOP phase • Collaborating in in developing the OI methodology for generating L4 UHR products • Test and validate the method to the diurnal variation proposed by the GHRSST in the Mediterranean sea. Define the limits of its applicability in within the context of the OI implementation. • Define space and time scale scales of the covariance function in the Mediterranean

  3. SST INTERPOLATION Some examples of the application of the objectiveanalysis Sea Surface Temperature 2 April 2003 The new daily SST field will be produced using space/time objective scheme developed by Santoleri et al (1991) to interpolate satellite SST field. This method already successively used by Artale et al (JGR, 2002)to produce daily SST products for assimilation into Mediterranean GCM. This method takes into account both the presence of continents and islands. The SST spatial and temporal decorrelation scales takes into account the typical scales of the Mediterranean basin. Exp (-r/a)2 Exp (-t/b) with a=100 Km and b= 5 days Test on OI: 1. Daily OI SST on the Mediterranean Basin (2002-2003) 2. Daily OI SST for the Adriatic using the daily product produced by Adricosm

  6. Stuart Menteth parametrization “No skin diurnal model is produced as it is assumed that the diurnal heating between the skin and sub-skin is almost identical and therefore the sub-skin model can be applied to all satellite measurements.” (GDSv1, rev.1.1) The day is divided in four parts and six models define the shape of the SST cycle. The predicted diurnal warm layer is referenced to the daily SST minimum. 1. morning cooling 0:00 - time of SST min 2. morning heating time of SST min - 12:00 3. afternoon heating/cooling 12:00 - 17:30  17:00 4. evening cooling 17:0017:30 - 24:00

  7. WP Nº : 2145 Analysis of proposed DV-model performance: Day minus Night daily mean bias and rms difference Day minus Night minus Diurnal daily mean bias and rms difference It seems that the method is correcting too much! What is the factor driving this overestimation? Night (J+1) minus Night (J) mean bias and rms difference Night (J+3) minus Night (J) mean bias and rms difference

  8. WP Nº : 2145 Analysis of proposed DV-model performance: problems in low winds areas
