The Crisis of Remediation • Each year about 2.5 million college freshman take math and English placement exams. • More than half learn they face required remediation. • In 2010 45% of MN high school graduates entering college required remediation. • Only about 22% of students that undertake remediation complete college and receive a degree. What was liked about EdReady • Video and Animation was helpful • Liked how the video showed the problems of how to do it • I have ADHD and so I did get distracted a bit during the assessments but really liked the videos – the animation, color was good, the length, the problem review • It’s stuff that I would need for my future career; its practical • It shows where you are at and what you need to work on • It’s helpful – reviews and shows what to work on Data gathered through student interviews upon completing the assessment and viewing tutorials.

What was liked about EdReady • It explains things; it’s easy to understand; explains why things are the way they are • I have a learning disability related to reading and writing and I like that it talks to you – the audio and animation – brings out the details in a slower format • I liked that it showed me what I don’t know and hone in on what I need to know • Liked that it kept things simple Data gathered through student interviews upon completing the assessment and viewing tutorials.

(2) • It took a while to take the assessment – review was good because it helped you go back to check what you did wrong. What was liked about EdReady • The challenges, wanting to spend more time working on project. • Easy to follow and applies to different materials/math subjects. • I like the test, your score and what you need to work and it’s right away. It’s non-threatening and you know right away what you need to work on. What would you tell others • Try it – it helped me! • Easy page to go to and that material is such that I enjoyed doing it. • They should get into it because it tells them their weaknesses and your strong points too and what to study. Observations • Online and blended learning can be used to help students access personalized learning, and real-time adaptation of learning through assessments • EdReadyprepares students for both “credit recovery” of high school units not earned and better preparation for college-level instruction. • Students expressed that it would motivate them more if they were to get help with deciding on a career path and then know how math pertains to their career path. • Such wrap-around student development resources and activities are available on the GPS LifePlan (http://gpslifeplan.org or http://gpslifeplan.org /secondary)
