Freedom and Responsibility – RecogniseWALT: Learn about the need to act responsibly. AFTER SCHOOL Ian and Jane had secretly been saving their pocket money for six weeks to buy their Mum a birthday present. They had seen her admiring a pair of earrings in the Jewellers shop in town, so they decided they would get off their bus at town and buy them. When they got to town they went to the shop, only to find it was closed, so they decided to find another shop. After a long search they found another jewellers where they had the same earrings. They bought them and went back to catch their bus. Meanwhile at home, Mum was very worried. It was nearly 5.30pm and Ian and Jane weren’t home. She rang up the school and was told they had gone home. She rang a few friends, but the children weren’t there. ‘I shall ring the police if they don’t turn up soon’, she said to herself.
Freedom and Responsibility – RecogniseWALT: Learn about the need to act responsibly. KEY QUESTIONS • What happened when Ian and Jane got home? Why? • What would the main issues be for Ian and Jane? • What would the main issues be for their Mum? • If the police were involved, what would the main issues be for them? We shall now role-play the scene where Ian and Jane get home.
Freedom and Responsibility – RecogniseWALT: Learn about the need to act responsibly. CONSIDER: • The freedom Mum has a right to. • The freedom the children have a right to. • What is responsible and irresponsible behaviour. • Their feelings and Mum’s feelings. • What Ian and Jane have learned from the situation; what Mum has learned. • What each of them would do differently in the future.
Freedom and Responsibility – ReflectWALT: How I exercise my freedom. Make a list of all of the occasions when you are ‘free’ from adult control. For example, going to and from school; playing outside; at the cinema; in the park; watching TV and DVD’s; in your free time. Pick one time and then answer the following questions about it: • What you do at this time. • How you feel – for example, secure, safe, responsible, guilty, afraid, happy, neglected. • What dangers there might be – for example, fire, poison, accident, strangers, traffic.
Freedom and Responsibility – ReflectWALT: How I exercise my freedom. Sacred Heart has rules to ensure everybody stays happy and safe. Write out the rules into your RE book and then add one more of your own.
Freedom and Responsibility – RespectWALT: Appreciate that freedom involves responsibility. Think about the work you have done. Think about: • The importance of being free. • The importance of being responsible. • The purpose of rules. • The rules you have explored. • The rules you have drawn up. • The rules you agree with and why. • The rules you do not agree with and why. • Rules you would add. • The ones you find easy to keep and why. • The ones you do not find easy to keep and why. • Did anything surprise you? Did anything make you stop and think?
Freedom and Responsibility – RespectWALT: Appreciate that freedom involves responsibility. Choose a new rule you have heard today that you think is important and you will try to keep. Design a card for yourself to keep this rule before you.
Freedom and Responsibility – RelateWALT: Learn about the commandments and how they help Christians to be free and responsible.
