  1. Information Society Technologies - IST Photonic Components: Strategic Objective 2.5.1 Ronan Burgess European Commission Directorate General Information Society and Media - Nanoelectronics and Photonics -

  2. Definition Photonics is the science of generating and harnessing light. It encompasses light sources, light detectors, and light manipulation (through guidance and , amplification, …) and its use for a wide range of applications. R.Burgess

  3. Photonics: Application Areas Long-Haul Metropolitan Home access Photonics in communications: expanding and scaling Board -> Inter-Chip -> Intra-Chip Photonics: diffusing into other application sectors Health(“bio-photonics”) Environment sensing Security imaging

  4. To develop advanced materials, solid-state sources and micro- and nano-scale photonic devices, and to integrate photonic functions in micro/nanoelectronics components ('Photonic system on a chip'). Projects are expected to address research challenges for mid-term to long-term industrial exploitation in one or more of the following application contexts: "Information technologies for health care and life science": bio-photonic functional components and sub-assemblies; "Communications and Infotainment": components and subsystems for low-cost or high-performance; " Environment and Security ": photonic sensors, fiber sensors, imaging components. Objectives

  6. Call 5 – Photonics - Focus 1. Manufacturing technologies and device concepts 2. Hybrid and monolithic integration for: - greater device functionality - Reduced cost and size - Reduced power consumption 3. Photonic systems on chip - communications (signal processing, wavelength manipulation) - Healthcare (bio-photonic sensors

  7. Call 5 – Photonics - Focus 4. Advanced components for optical networks and low-cost components for broadband access 5. Advance sources (Semiconductor, organic, fiber sources): - Compactness, tunability and spectral purity - Solid-state lighting for ICT aplications

  8. Call 5 - Photonics - Instruments Integrated Projects (65 % of budget): - Biophotonics functional components and subassemblies - Low cost communication components - Advance source technologies for multiple applications Application-driven and medium-term exploitation STREPS (35 % of budget):  Medium- to long-term exploitation CAs/SSAs - Roadmaps, coordination - Access to components for education, validation, standardization and dissemination activities And … we encourage new member/candidate states and SMEs
