First Aid Kits • To be used for field trips only (First aid at school should be given by Nurse or health designee • Contents-See list and demonstration • Scissors, tape, and emergency blanket was added this year as recommended by Health Advisory Committee • Flashlights are given to every classroom • When using a supply out of the first aid kit on a field trip, complete the Supply Request form and give to the FSW so that it can get replaced • Storage- accessible to adults but not children • Sign-Place near the First Aid Kit

Flip Charts • Flip charts are given to each classroom • They have information in them for emergencies such as phone numbers and instructions for what to do in case of an emergency (See flip chart in packet) • The last section in the chart will have a student roster and an Emergency Action Plan prepared by your team nurse for any child that has a diagnosed chronic medical condition as reported by the parent (Will talk about this more in next section) • Place Flip chart in an easily accessible location near the door • To be taken on Field trips, or any evacuation including drills (tornado, fire, bomb etc)

  4. Emergency Action Plans • Each child that enrolls in Head Start will have a medical conditions form filled out by parent/guardian. If they have no chronic medical condition, they will still check none and sign. • The team nurse will then fill out an emergency action plan for that specific condition (Examples : asthma, seizures, severe allergies) • These plans are explained to you by the team nurse within first few weeks of school • Placed in back envelope of flip chart and to be taken on field trips (child to go to nurse/health designee if emergency happens at school) • School nurse will have a copy and will update it as it changes

  5. Accidents at School • Child to see the School nurse or designee first for any first Aid. Nurse will then notify EMS and parents if needed • If child seeks medical attention outside of school nurse, tell your FSW so that they can fill out the proper Injury forms for Head start • Head Start Team nurse needs a copy of accident report for any accident that occurs at school

Universal Precautions • All school and Head Start employees must have yearly Universal precautions and Blood born pathogens training • This training provides information required by Head Start Performance Standards including gloving , hand washing and cleaning blood spills • You will receive a card to give to your district showing you have received the basic general Bloodborne Pathogens information

  8. First Aid Topics (See Handouts) • Choking • Asthma • Diabetes • Seizures • Bleeding • Heat exhaustion/stroke • Hypothermia • Epinephrine pen (see following slide)

Epinephrine PenIntroductory Points (handouts) • Given to children who have a severe allergic reaction to an allergen • Common severe allergens are: Bees, Nuts • Child must have a prescription by MD and must provide the pen to the school with proper labeling. Each child has individual pen • Kept in locked box (FSW office or classroom) • Always take with you on a field trip and to playground • FSW are not allowed to give any medication • If school nurse if not accessible, teacher would give medication

When to Give Epi-Pen Injection When students have symptoms of the following: • Hives spreading all over the body • Wheezing that won’t stop after inhaler use or resting • Having difficulty swallowing or breathing • Swelling in face or neck • Tingling or swelling of the tongue • Signs of shock such as gray color, clammy skin, loss of consciousness

Epi-Pen continued: Procedure for Administering the Injection: (Practice with samples) • Have someone get school nurse and call 911 • It is given in the upper thigh through the clothes • Will need 2 people. 1 to hold child and 1 to give • Have student sit down • Pull off grey cap • Hold black tip near outer thigh • Jab firmly into upper thigh so that autoinjector is at 90 degree angle to thigh • Count full 10 seconds when administering

Epinephrine buys you 15 minutes of time After Injection of Epinephrine: • Child should go to the Emergency Room • Send used Epi pen to the ER with them • Document the time you gave it • Follow your ISD Policy regarding incident reporting etc REMEMBER PREPARATION IS THE KEY: *get with your school nurse a couple of days before field trip and review signs/symptoms, Emergency Action plans and procedure for giving epi-pen

  14. 45 day Calender Performance Standards require that the following be performed on all students within the first 45 days of enrollment (New students 45 days begin the day they start school) Hearing and Vision Screening • Usually done by your school nurse • Team nurse will do it if needed • You can help ease anxiety by explaining what will happen and demonstrating with a game to children a couple of days before the screening

  15. 45 Day Calendar continued: Height and Weight • Performed by nurse or FSW • Nutrition will make graphs and consult with child and parent if needed

  16. 90 Day Calendar Performance Standards require that the following be performed on each head start child within the first 90 days of enrollment (begins first day child starts services) • Physical-done by child’s physician with last yr • Dental-done by child’s Dentist within last yr or onsite dentist -the team nurse will schedule • Blood hemoglobin and lead-done at doctor with physical or, if not, team nurse will come to site to perform • Blood Pressure-done on physical or, if not, school nurse or team nurse
