Characteristics of Culture pg 60 - 65 Human Society – an organized group of people identified by its customs, traditions, and way of life • Each country and its people have their own way of doing things that are sometimes similar to our way of doing things but most of the time it is different • These groups of different ways of doing things are called human societies • People are not born with the knowledge of their culture • Culture is learned by living with a family and growing up as a member of society, this is called enculturation Enculturation – the process of learning culture

6. Cultures Change pages 61 • Some countries have many cultural groups with different cultures, other countries only have one culture • Japan has a single culture because it has a very long history of cultural unity • They also have a population that is almost 100% Japanese people

Cultures Change pages 61 Cultural borrowing – When a society takes culture traits from one culture and use them their own culture • Only about 10% of a society’s culture traits are its very own and found only in that society, about 90% are borrowed • This can be seen in clothing, music, and sports • Each culture trait that is borrowed is then added to as it moves from culture to culture
