  3. CBIWDM Strategic Goal: Reduced social and economic impact of water resource limitations in communities of Jordan with external stressors

  4. Project Objectives • Build the capacity of 175 Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to become more involved in activities that improve water demand management. • Build community capacity in resources management through the adoption and implementation of water and energy related projects. • Improve water supply in target communities of Northern Jordan to decrease tension

  5. Impact • Increasing quantity and quality of water in rural settings. • Increasing water use efficiency at the household and small farm level. • Increasing awareness, capacity and involvement of community leaders and end-users in the water equation. • Increase Community Resilience toward resources scarcity and ability to adapt to external stressors • Provide a replicable successful cases in communal water and energy resource management.

  6. Activities 3 sets of activities: I: 175 Grants to Establishing Revolving Loan Funds for Water. II: 256 Grants to implement Communal Water and Energy Projects. III: Improve water supply in target communities of Northern Jordan

  7. Achievements • 193 grants (Avg. 20,000 USD) • Funding:4.46 M USD • 11,430 projects funded • 25% borrowers are women • 61,722direct beneficiaries • 93% repayment rate • 2.5 turnover rate from initial investment • Over 1,000,000m3 water harvested/saved

Communal projects types: • 186 Water efficiency projects in schools (RHW, NM, WSDs, awareness), • Water efficiency projects in 10 mosques, 2 churches and 12 clinics (RWH, new faucets and WSDs) • 4 Springs and agricultural canals rehabilitated • 8 Communal large rainwater harvesting ponds rehabilitated Impact realized by the whole, or part of each community

  11. Yarmouk Water Company Issues: • Population increased by 20% • Water per capita decreased by 10% • # of complaints in 2011: 16000 • # of complaints in 2013: 45000 • YWC limited capacity to respond

  13. Kharja Village • Population 7000 Jordanians – 2500 Syrians • Revolving Loans: 16 Households • Water harvested: 30 cubic meters x 16 = 480 cubic meters • Communal Projects: 2 rainwater harvesting cisterns at 2 schools • Beneficiaries: 860 students – 18% Syrians

Gender inclusion • % & # of women dominated CBOs: 27% (48 from 177) • % of women in the revolving loan management committee: 28.11% • % of women in the different training we delivered: 20% • % & # of women who took loans from CBOs: 23% (2,305 from 10,239) • % & # of women who benefited from the individual projects: 50% (27,645 from 55,290)
