  1. An Example Idea of FIA Authors: Date: 2010-05-20 Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  2. Large number of STAs are constantly entering and exiting the coverage area of an ESS. Every STA passes through the coverage area in a short time. So FIA intends to Reduce network connection latency Reduce air-time occupancy of initial authentication Use Case Scenario Walk Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  3. Sequence of Establishing Connection • Discover an appropriate AP • Channel Scanning, Probe, IEEE 802.11u… • WLAN association • Authentication, Association… • Upper layer setup • DHCP… Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  4. Protocol Sequence to Establish a Connection to the Internet by IEEE802.11i ( PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2) and DHCP STA AP 14 round trip 2ms/oneway: 56ms RADIUS Probe Authentication 11 round trip 5ms/oneway: 110ms Association PEAP /EAP-MSCAPv2 (11 round trip) Details are out of scope. We’ll make only a Framework and liaison to IETF DHCP (2 round trip) DHCP Server Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  5. How to reduce connection latency andair-time occupancy • Reducing number of frame exchanges is effective.Because… • Length of each frame for association is short.(mostly < 100byte) • Overhead (Preamble, IFS, Header, ACK, etc…) is needed for every frame. Preamble FCS CW Ack Data DIFS SIFS PLCP Header MAC Header Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  6. Protocol Sequence to Establish a Connection to the Internet by FIA STA AP 1.5 round trip 2ms/oneway: 6ms Beacon GAS Server GAS FIA 2 round trip 5ms/oneway: 20ms RADIUS Connection established (Includes some parts of upper layer setup such as IP address, gateway, DNS…) Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.

  7. How to reduce the number of frame exchanges in AP discovery • Restricting to transmit probe. • Beacon includes FIA Capability bit to indicate. • Some amendments to .11u may be needed for reducing GAS transmission. Such as… • AP should transmit GAS response as broadcast to notify the information to other STAs too. • STAs, which received broadcasted GAS response and the information included in the GAS response is enough, should not transmit GAS request to the same AP. Hitoshi Morioka, ROOT INC.
