  2. Purpose NHS Estates has policy responsibility within the Department of Health for: • the built environment • non-clinical support services (food, cleaning, building maintenance etc)

  3. Purpose (cont…) New research proposals are encouraged in four broad areas: • Impact on the built environment of standardisation • Designing out infection • Ventilation • Life-cycle costing - appropriate selection of maintainable finishes as well as ministerial and national priorities

  4. Funding • The Department of Health holds an annual R & D budget of approximately £477m • NHS Estates has a ring-fenced allocation of £375k

  5. Ongoing Projects Include: • Design for Health: the impact of a new hospital environment on children, families and staff (UWE) • An Ecological Footprint of the NHS (Stockholm Environment Institute) - geared funding • Lighting and Colour Design in Hospitals (BRE) • Rethinking Hospital Design and Briefing (DEGW) • One Patient One Room (University of Sheffield) • The Use of Small Negative Air Ions to Disinfect MRSA (University of Leeds) • Size and Nature of the Current Need for Single Room Isolation in Hospital (LGI)

  6. Dissemination • Via the Knowledge and Information Portal - accessible through the Agency’s website at: Http://www.nhsestates.gov.uk • through an annual CD-ROM • selective publication of hard copy
