  3. 2. Lead In • Tell what is happening in the story & who the quote is referring to • Purpose? • Pretend the person reading your essay has never read “The Gift of the Magi.” What does that person need to know before you introduce the quote?

In addition, Della is worried about what Jim will think of her haircut when she says, “Please God, make him think I am still pretty” (Henry 527).

  6. Time to Practice Using three of the quotes you found to characterize Granddaddy, write three practice TLQ’s. # 1-3 Write very neatly—you will be sharing these with the class.
