Who Are We? • NADSN is a super-network with a mission to connect and represent disabled staff networks • We focus on the tertiary education sector (i.e. universities and colleges) • We are open to any individual and organisation interested in the equality of disabled staff • We act as a collective platform to share experiences and good practice and examine challenges and opportunities • We are an unincorporated association, non-governmental, independent and self-determining, made up of impassioned people @nadsn_uk

Our Aims – some of them! • Promote disability equality and campaign for disabled staff networks to be supported in the workplace • Promote the interests of disabled staff on a national level • Challenge stereotypes by endorsing the Social Model of Disability, promoting a positive image of disabled people and eliminating the deficit/medical model • Organise and deliver accessible events that can bring disabled staff and disability equality allies together • Create regional hubs to make it easier for members to meet each other • Support relevant research projects, policies and guidance for disabled staff, managers, institutions of tertiary education (HEIs and FEIs) and Government agencies • Link with disabled students, particularly at postgraduate and doctoral levels @nadsn_uk

Social Model of Disability • “The social model of disability identifies systemic barriers, negative attitudes and exclusion by society (purposely or inadvertently) that mean society is the main contributory factor in disabling people” (Wikipedia) • Prejudice, ignorance, stigma • Negative attitudes • Inaccessible places, conversations and information @nadsn_uk

  12. LGBT+ Network of Networks in Higher Education enhancing the sustainability of LGBT+ Staff Networks in the higher education sector, and supporting the continuous professional development of their networks’ officers lgbtnonhe.ac.uk (coming soon) @LGBTNoNHE

WHAT? • LGBT+ Network of Networks in Higher Education (NoN) is a super-network with a mission to connect and represent LGBT+ staff networks • We focus on the higher education sector • Most of our members are LGBT+ Staff Networks officers or ally practitioners from higher education institutions in the UK • NoN members have a proud and collegiate culture in offering peer support to fellow LGBT+ Staff Networks through the NoN mail list • NoN convenes members’ meetings twice a year to disseminate inclusive practices and professional training workshops. @LGBTNoNHE

OUR ASPIRATION! • Focus on supporting LGBT+ staff network officers with their knowledge of LGBT+ equality issues and skills around engagement with senior leadership • Provision of national support, training, and resources to empower LGBT+ networks and individual officers • Supporting networks to become more stable and resilient to ensure “business continuity” of their mission • A first point of contact for E&D units or individuals at institutions which do not currently have a network, or are seeking to refresh/renew their exiting provision • Providing a strong national voice for LGBT+ staff networks in HE @LGBTNoNHE

SOME FACTS • Founded in 2017 after a call through the LGBT History Month blog on then ECU website and officially launched in summer 2018 • A consortium of nearly 200 professionals from around 90 universities, research institutions, sectoral agencies, and equality organisations • Led by a Steering Group of 10 • Our members’ meetings have been on a tour to LSE, Warwick, UCL, Sheffield Hallam • Next meeting: 8th October, 2019 at The Open University @LGBTNoNHE

THE VOICE FROM NoN • Promoting an educational environment free from harassment and bullying does not contradict the principles of academic freedom • We advocate for an academy where everybody can be authentic to be who they are • We stand in solidarity with trans staff and students and will continue to challenge views that run counter to our principles of an inclusive academy @LGBTNoNHE
